NJ - Sen. Bob Menendez and his wife, Nadine, indicted on bribery charges, Sept 2023

Judge Sidney H. Stein began late Thursday to read legal instructions to the jury so jurors have a roadmap to follow during their deliberations. He resumed reading them the instructions shortly before 10 a.m. Friday. He had told them that they were likely to start deliberating around midday.

To reach a verdict, jurors were expected to sift through the testimony of numerous witnesses, along with hundreds of emails, text messages, financial records and other documents, including some which prosecutors say show that serial numbers on some of the gold bars prove that they came from the businessmen.

The jury is also expected to consider the testimony of Jose Uribe, a businessman who pleaded guilty to charges in a cooperation deal with the government.

Among witnesses called by the defense was Menendez's sister, Caridad Gonzalez, who recalled how family members fled Cuba in 1951 with only the cash they had hidden in a grandfather's clock before moving to New York City, where the future senator was born. He was raised across the Hudson River in the New Jersey cities of Hoboken and Union City.

Menendez's lawyers have argued that it was not unusual for the senator to store large amounts of cash at home given his family's history

The local NPR radio station, WNYC, did a segment on Menendez this morning (July12) that might be of interest to those following the case. Scroll down at the link until "Mendendez Trial Wraps Up." The segment starts at about the 1:44 mark.

"A New Jersey elementary school named after disgraced Sen. Bob Menendez is dropping his name after his conviction on federal bribery charges.

The Robert Menendez Elementary School in West New York, New Jersey, will return to its original name, PS #3."

Wonder why he's waiting until August 20?
From the NY Post July 29, 2024 article by Isabel Keane in inthedetails post #47 above….. seems there is a financial consideration. Quoting from the lower portion of that article entitled ‘Robert Menendez Elementary School to change name after senator’s bribery conviction’:

“only agreeing to step aside on Aug. 20 — date that will likely ensure he gets to collect one final taxpayer-funded paycheck on his way out the door.”

Why aren’t his colleagues not censuring him, reprimanding him, or demand he leave office immediately? Wonder if Senate rules allow for immediate removal or stripping of any duties and assignments? MOO

Sen. Menendez’s staff was just informed the senator will resign effective August 20th.

And he did resign.

Menendez signaled his resignation would take effect at the end of the day Tuesday in a letter last month to Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy, who said Friday he’s tapping a former top aide to succeed the three-term incumbent.

George Helmy will succeed Menendez until the November election results for the Senate seat are certified late in the month, the governor said. At that point, Murphy said Helmy will resign and he’ll name the winner of the election to the seat.

CNN online January 29, 2025 article by Kara Scannell and Lauren del Valle entitled ‘Former Sen. Bob Menendez sentenced to 11 years for corruption and bribery conviction’:

Interestingly the article also states “His lawyers asked the judge to allow Menendez to stay out of prison as he appeals his conviction.”

The reporting does not clarify if the judge has ruled on the request. And a photo embedded in the article shows the sentenced Senator getting in a vehicle. He does not IMO appear to have been cuffed and was not wearing prison garb. It isn’t clear that the sentenced, convicted Senator will immediately enter a federal prison. SMH. MOO
