New Jersey Man Charged With Killing 7 in Nearly 2 Months

A 22-year-old man has been charged with fatally shooting seven people and wounding an eighth in a seven-week spree that spread from New Jersey to Pennsylvania, punctuated by bursts of violence that left multiple people dead in the span of several hours.

The man, Todd West, of Elizabeth, N.J., led police officers on a frantic chase, sometimes shooting his next victim before investigators had wiped the asphalt of the last person’s blood, the authorities said on Thursday.

His motive remained unclear, as did the method he used to choose his targets, but the authorities in Union County, N.J., called the carnage he left behind “horrific.”

Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli told the station that the shootings were random and the victims may not have known the killers.

The victims' families have filed a lawsuit in Philadelphia against Walmart that one expert says could succeed despite federal protections for gun and ammo dealers...

"The bottom line here is that Walmart sold .38-caliber handgun ammunition to an underage person in the middle of the night, and that ammunition was used to kill several people," said Philadelphia attorney Matt Casey, who filed the suit last week.

Jourdain was sentenced to 12 to 40 years in a state prison. The sentence was the result of a plea deal reached when Jourdain pleaded guilty on Feb. 6 to conspiracy to commit third-degree murder.

On Tuesday, Mitchell pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit third-degree murder for his role in the crimes. Under the deal, he was sentenced to 7 years and six months to 15 years in state prison. Judge James Anthony also added a $25,000 fine.
