Five people have been injured following a stabbing in central Amsterdam, police say.

Dutch police say the area, which includes Dam Square, has been cordoned off and an emergency helicopter has been deployed.

A suspect has been arrested but the motive remains unclear, police say.

There are no details about the condition of the injured.
Video posted on social media shows the helicopter in front of the Royal Palace in Dam Square and emergency vehicles also inside the cordoned-off area.

Police are urging anyone with images of the incident to upload them as evidence.

here is a dutch live blog with updates and a live stream on dam square. and videos of the helicopter arriving etc.

eye witnesses speak of a girl has been stabbed in the back, an older woman stabbed in the back, and an injured older man. no information yet about a possible motive. i’m glad the person who did this was immediately arrested.

amsterdam is my hometown and i don’t remember something similar to this happening here before.

'Still unclear if there are multiple crime scenes'

Reporter Jeroen de Jager on Dam Square:

"It is unclear if there are multiple crime scenes. There is talk of the Sint Nicolaasstraat, a connection between the Damrak and the Nieuwezijdse Voorburgwal. But someone was also stabbed in the Gravenstraat, according to a witness. This would mean that the perpetrator stabbed in several places.

A witness saw the suspect lying handcuffed on the ground. Dam Square has been cordoned off and streetcar traffic is at a standstill. Many people in the downtown area do not know what happened. The sun is shining and many people are shopping."

an eyewitness (on at5, live tv) says he was sitting outside, making a phone call when an american tourist came over and asked him to call the emergency number.
he saw a girl with a knife still quite deep in her back, and a guy running away. thankfully the witnesses knew not to remove the knife.

from what i understood the american tourist was the first person who got to the victim and didn’t know her before.

edit - other witnesses talk about a weird guy who appeared behind a woman and stabbed her, seemingly a random attack. ambulance helicopter appeared really quickly.

Police: four people seriously injured

Four people were seriously injured in this afternoon's stabbing at Dam Square, police say. Earlier there was talk of five wounded because the suspect was counted among the injured.

A citizen was involved in the arrest, says a police spokesman. With this he confirms a report from Het Parool that the suspect had been pushed to the ground by a bystander. The bystander then allegedly sat on the suspect until the police arrived.

How the victims are doing is not yet clear.
The stabbing took place around 3:20 p.m. on Sint Nicolaas Street. Police say the situation is under control.

Victims randomly stabbed according to police

Police have just given more information about the identity of the stabbing victims. They are a 67-year-old woman from America, a 69-year-old man from America, a 26-year-old man from Poland, a 73-year-old woman from Belgium and a 19-year-old woman from Amsterdam.

"We are doing full investigation, but for now it looks like they were stabbed completely at random," the spokesman said.

i feel sad that it seems to have happened to mostly people just enjoying their holiday :( *i’m assuming this because of the nationalities and the fact that this happened in a very touristy area - it’s not a confirmed fact*. it must be extra hard when something so awful happens and you’re away from home and your family.

Police raid hotel near Dam

Police raided a hotel near Dam Square this evening. The raid is related to this afternoon's stabbing, reports a spokesperson. Further details were not disclosed.

i’m guessing the suspect might be a tourist too? i wonder if it’s another case of a tourist getting a drug induced psychosis :( jmoo.

Could you please post a link to a translation into English of the article, as when I try to use Google Translate for the link I get *Access denied*, even if I'm in Europe.

i’m not sure how to do a translated link, but here’s a translation from the article:

also, police has said they are hoping to share more about the suspects identity later today.

there is a rumor about the background of the suspect and if it’s true, it’s quite surprising imo.

His actions sparked waves of praise on social media, with one comment saying: 'Respect for this man. We need more heroes like this'

Good for him. I wouldn't be surprised if he's a policeman. I saw the video and it looks almost like this is routine for him.

'Hero' who jumped on top of perpetrator stabbing Amsterdam suspected to be Englishman, video goes global

The man who worked and held the stabbing suspect to the ground in Amsterdam on Thursday is an English-speaking tourist. Eyewitnesses report to this site that he is from the United Kingdom. Police can only confirm that the man is not a Dutch national.

If you are using Google, you have access to Google Translate in the 'dotted square' where you have all the Google links (Gmail, Maps, Calender, and so on). Copy the address of the website you want to translate, then open Translate in a new window, chose 'website' and paste the address into the 'website' field. Then chose languages, for exmple Dutch to English, and click on the arrow. That should take you to a page whit the translated article that you can post.

some updates, paraphrased from at5
• the 26 year old polish man has left the hospital
• the four other victims are still in the hospital but in stable condition
• the suspect has been brought from the hospital to scheveningen (detention center for those who need medical care)
• the suspect refused to share his name and had multiple different identity documents on him. the police say they have an idea about his identity but won’t share this until they are certain. all scenarios are still on the table.
• the mayor met with the man who did the citizens arrest to thank him. he has received a hero’s ribbon. she said he’s a humble man who doesn’t feel the need to be in the spotlight, he’s mainly worried about the victims now.

the suspect is a 30 year old ukrainian from the donetsk region. motive still unclear. both the heavy crime department and terrorism department are investigating.

This is the incredible moment a British tourist chased down and tackled a knifeman after he stabbed five people in Amsterdam
''Police say the man suspected of stabbing five people in Amsterdam is a 30-year-old from Ukraine.
Investigators say he hailed from the Donetsk region in the east of the country - which has largely operated as a breakaway state from Ukraine for more than a decade and was unlawfully annexed by Russia in 2022.''

'This suspect will be brought before the examining magistrate of the court in Amsterdam on Tuesday 1 April, who will decide on a possible extension of the pre-trial detention.''

'Detectives say the suspect checked into a hotel in Amsterdam on March 26, and used several knives in the attack. '
'' Police say they are still trying to identify a motive.'
