Toddler shot baby in face while couple showered, police said

A couple faces charges in the shooting of their 8-month-old baby.

The child is alive but was seriously wounded and has been in critical condition since she was shot on Saturday.

Shayanne Nelson told police officers she was taking a shower with her boyfriend, Tyrrell Bitsilly, when they heard a gunshot.

A couple who was staying in a Zia Motel room said they ran out of the bathroom to find the 8-month-old girl bleeding from her face.

The child was rushed from the Gallup Indian Medical Center and was in critical condition. But a spokesman with the hospital said she was transferred to University of New Mexico Hospital on Tuesday.

She said she didn’t know there was even a gun in the room and thinks it was left behind by a prior customer, but the hotel manager said he doesn’t think that’s true.

Well, isn't Mr Bitsilly well named. It is a shame that they were not married and they both could have been called a bit silly.

Poor little girl! I hope she can recover and heal. And the boy as well.

The mother and her bf don't look one bit remorseful or worried in their mugshots. Hope both kids get taken from them - or is that a given?

Stranger things do happen... I'm not saying its probable, or even likely, but it is possible.

It's all gone a bit quiet on this case so I did some digging for more recent updates:

CF, who was eating at a nearby Taco Bell, responded to the call for help and later told police that he found Bitsilly wiping the gun down with a towel..... As a result, Bitsilly has been charged with of tampering with evidence in addition to the child abuse charges.

This was not the first incident of a shooting involving both the couple and Nelson’s children.
Just two months ago, Bitsilly was arrested after he allegedly fired a gun inside a car carrying Nelson, her two children and her mother. Bitsilly was charged with aggravated assault with deadly weapon, child abuse, shooting from a motor vehicle and tampering with evidence, in connection with that incident, the Associated Press reports.

The pair had been dating off and on since Shayanne's fiance - and the father of her two children - was killed in a car accident last year, Shanna Nelson said. He was often emotionally and physically abusive, she said. But the emotionally depleted Nelson, who regularly found herself with no place to stay, returned to Bitsilly for comfort and out of fear, according to her sister.
