FARMINGTON — The San Juan County Sheriff's Office is requesting the public's assistance regarding a cold case from 1996.
The department is looking into the case of Betty Claw, a Native American woman who went missing in the Farmington area, according to a post on the sheriff's office Facebook page.
Det. Andrew Gilbert of the sheriff's office said he recently reached out to members of Claw's family regarding the case.
He hopes to help bring the family closure and find out any information about Claw after she disappeared more than 21 years ago.
Claw would be 71 years old if she is still alive. One of Claw's daughters told Gilbert she last saw Claw on Thanksgiving in 1996.
It was one of Claw's sisters who reported her missing in December 1996 and said that Claw was last seen in the Farmington area, according to Gilbert.
Claw is described as being 5-foot-6 and weighing approximately 140 pounds with brown eyes and black hair at the time of her disappearance.
The sheriff's office stated it is unknown if Claw is still living and that she could be using an alias of Ina if she is.
She did have plastic surgery on her right lip following a car accident in which she was injured.
Other identifying marks for Claw include a mole on her right shoulder she referred to as her "spider," along with damage to her ankles and thumb, where she had pins inserted during surgery.
