Volunteers sought in new search for missing Capitan woman
Volunteers are being asked to help in the continuing search for
Jean A. Johnson, a 70-year-old Capitan resident missing since May 27.
Her daughter, HJ of Ruidoso, said searchers will meet at 8 a.m. July 17, at the intersection of New Mexico Highway 37 and Bonito Lake Road.

Sheriff Robert Shepperd cautioned searchers that if something is discovered, they should be careful not to contaminate the scene and to call his department immediately.

HJ said her mother was very responsible and was watching a friend's dog
when she disappeared.

"Right after that my friend called me and said, 'Hey, I came back in town and your mom was going to drop the dog off on her way into town yesterday and I can't get ahold of her.' So, I immediately drove out there. I just felt something was wrong."
When she arrived, HJ noticed her mother's front door was ajar.
"All of her stuff was there," she said. "Everything looked totally normal beside the dog in the house. As soon as I saw that, the dog is really clean but had accidents. She would never have just left him there."
[...]
She said the only item missing was a 357-caliber pistol that was kept in a hope chest.
"She only used it for protection and she would not have gotten it out unless someone came to her house," HJ said. "Everything she owned is accounted for. Her purse and phone were locked in her car. She had her laundry bag ready to go (to do the wash at HJ's house), and the little pouch (in which) she carries her Derringer and phone was there.

Her glasses were in the house, along with the two purses that she carried, one with paperwork.
"She has two gates on her driveway and the bottom one was locked," HJ said. "Someone would have had to have taken her out of the house to their vehicle (outside the bottom gate)."

"Police have not used dogs, but in a search last Sunday, some dogs were brought," HJ said. "They didn't find anything. They were searching toward the top of Ski Run Road. I think they could be a major resource, but it is hard to narrow it down to where we need to be.
"Horses are welcome, ATVs are welcome. Bring sunscreen, hats, water and snacks, if they want some."
She said past searches have lasted about four hours.
