Another Taos woman goes missing

Local Taos musician Melissa Crabtree, 51, was reported missing on Feb. 29 after her family had not heard from her for two weeks, Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe said in a March 4 press release.
  • The press release did not state where she was last seen.
  • Searches of her home and vehicle offered no clues as to her whereabouts.
  • According to court records, she kept a post office box in Arroyo Seco.
  • Melissa had lived in the Taos area for years and was well-known in the local music scene.
  • She also worked as a local river rafting guide and was profiled in "Remarkable Women of Taos," a book spotlighting local women.
  • Holly White, Taos Center for the Arts, also went missing nearly four years ago, not long before she was to turn 50. She has not been found.
If you have any information, please contact Taos Central Dispatch at (575) 758-2216.

Thanks for posting that link, @PommyMommy! The page stated its purpose was to help find Melissa, and to celebrate Melissa's life, so there were lots of posts of Melissa performing. After reading through it all, I found this disturbing info posted as a reply to a comment:

The Search for Sweet Melissa Crabtree (Link to the post that has important info in a reply to a comment)

"The Search for Sweet Melissa Crabtree [Name of person this replied to] Car was found and towed on February 13th near the Gorge Bridge. We're still trying to determine when she was last seen or heard from.

I'm extremely concerned about Melissa, especially hearing that her car was found near a bridge.

Not just "a" bridge.
The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, locally known as the "Gorge Bridge" or the "High Bridge", is a steel deck arch bridge across the Rio Grande Gorge 10 miles northwest of Taos, New Mexico, United States. Roughly 600 ft above the Rio Grande, it is the tenth highest bridge in the United States.

It's not difficult to figure out what happened here.

I have been extremely concerned about Melissa, ever since I read posts from her friends on FB. Then when I found out her vehicle was found near this bridge, I was just so sad for Melissa.

While it does have guard rails, IMO it looks very possible to climb over:

Rio Grande Gorge searched for missing Taos woman, a musician
  • What began as a missing person case took a turn after Melissa’s vehicle was found near the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, where many people have jumped to their deaths over the years.
  • TCSO searched the rim of the Rio Grande Gorge and scanned the river and its banks on Thursday.
  • A helicopter from Los Alamos assisted in the search. Next, LE plans to take a raft down the river with two deputies trained in swiftwater rescues.
  • Sheriff Hogrefe learned from Melissa’s friends that she had been suicidal.
  • People who commented on a news post also indicated she might have been struggling with mental health issues.
  • She also might have had physical health problems.
  • In 2014, The Taos News reported Melissa had been diagnosed with Lyme disease, a bacterial infection that, if left untreated, can spread to the joints, heart and nervous system.

On 8 November, his body was discovered in gorge by rafters.

November 13, 2002
Erik Sanchez was murdered when he was thrown off the Taos Gorge bridge during the course of a car theft. The crime began when two men, Luis Acosta, the driver, and David Sandoval, the passenger, tricked Sanchez into pulling over and stopping his car. Sandoval then forced Sanchez at gunpoint to relinquish control of his car, and Sandoval drove off with Sanchez in the passenger seat. Acosta followed in the other car. Eventually, Acosta left his car at his mother's house, and the two hijackers continued in Sanchez's car to the bridge, where they threw Sanchez to his death and took his car.

7 March, 2003: Herson Vigil, 31
Vigil shot himself in the head at the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge and his body then fell into the gorge on a Friday afternoon.

27 April, 2003: Mariana Augustini, 44
Augustini of Santa Fe and Vermont jumped to her death from the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge leaving a suicide note in her car.

4 June, 2003: Susan Jayne Weiss
Weiss, of Santa Fe, (no age given), committed suicide by jumping off the bridge. Her body found in the gorge on 20 July.

I can't cross the bridge after Erik. (ETA: I just noticed that the date is wrong. This actually happened in 1998)
It haunts me. :(

Note: At trial, it was disclosed that evidence was found of Erik clinging to the railings, trying to save his life. They hit and kicked his hands until he lost his grip and fell to his death. He put up quite a fight. I can't imagine the terror of falling into that biting cold darkness. It's the stuff nightmares are made of.

Incredibly sad for our friend...

Thank you very much- can not express the absolute talent that she exudes as a consummate musician. Just amazing. And she sparkles in personality A few years back a group of us were camping in Mexico. She had some shoulder surgery done and couldn't carry her guitar- so instead brought a mandolin and blew everyone away! Just awesome!
Thank you so much for your kindness
I'm so sorry. She seems like a lovely woman, talented and full of life. (((Hugs)))

It is extremely difficult to comprehend...

It is always difficult to understand how such a talented and caring person, who is adored by many, can still feel isolated and alone with her stuggles. Melissa brought her love of music to multiple countries when performing and she spread her love of rivers to many when she was a river guide. There are many people who are missing Melissa, and I hope she can be located soon.

Yes my friend , she is well loved~ and is connecting us with that giant heart of hers.

I live in Taos - was just out at the Gorge bridge taking a brief hike along the trail which follows the canyon
It's a real travesty the popularity the bridge has for suicides :(
It's a majestic bridge & views
I hope Melissa is found

Deeper concern for the community (& I do NOT wish to sound flippant about Melissa at all) is Holly's disappearance - ie, is there a serial killer or copy cat running around....?

It would seem Melissa, according to friends, has suffered depression & expressed suicidal thoughts :(
These suicides hit the community hard - but to lose someone who was so beloved in the community.....
The community has done blessings, prayer groups, poetry & affirmation installations, buddhist ceremonies - you name it: to try to bring awareness, to heal the community
And yet...people keep jumping :(

Prayers to her family and friends
May she be found soon

Good Day Fellow Sleuthers and friends of Melissa~
There is a request by family members for anyone in the Taos area willing to distribute flyers, especially to areas occupied by the homeless. Please contact them via Facebook Messenger at The Search for Sweet Melissa Crabtree
We thank you so much for your help
