Albuquerque police said he had the makings of a serial killer, but Fontayne Hopkins who admitted to randomly killing two people in three days may never go to prison.

When 21-year-old Hopkins was arrested in mid-March Chief Ray Schultz said at the time they believed they stopped a killing spree.

Montoya-Leon, a Plaza Inn housekeeper working alone on the fifth floor cleaning a room March 10, 2012, was raped and stabbed with a knife that was later thrown into the trash at the nearby Embassy Suites hotel. Garcia was found March 13, 2012, in his apartment with a bag over his head and battered with a hand weight.

According to a plea agreement, Hopkins at the time was living mostly on the streets.
