TAOS — It’s been over a year since a 46-year-old woman who’d been diagnosed with mental illness went missing after purchasing a plot of land in Tres Piedras, but her mother is holding onto hope she’ll be found.

“The fact is that no parent wants to outlive their children,” said Shelia Wells, Tameka Norris’ mother. “We’re supposed to go first, not them.

That’s what I’m afraid of. I’m afraid the cops are going to call, come to my door and tell me something happened to her. That’s why I need somebody to find her.”

This is the first time I'm hearing about the case. Tres Piedras has a population of less than 200 people, it's very rural. Where could Tameka be after all this time? Why did she go to NM?

What a strange story!

She missed her flight, blocked aunt and mother on social media, and then ended up in New Mexico. All over a few months. It looks like the property is still in her name and she used her mother's Ohio mailing address for her tax bill. If she's receiving SSI or RSDI, the SSA should be able to tell where and how her payments are distributed. And her bank or benefit card company should be able to tell when and where any cards were used. I wonder if authorities have looked into all this.

I wonder if family knows how she got to NM as well as if Tameka has a history of being transient. There is no mention of where she lived nor what type of job she has. Here's her FB page . I noticed no recent posts and that in a video from December 2022 she mentioned that "we are at a warming shelter". Is the we just the people also there or she and a specific person or people she was with. I believe she is missing on her own accord, she may not be alone, and she doesn't want to be found. MOO. I hope I'm right and nothing bad has happened to her.

Details of Disappearance

Norris was last seen in Tres Piedras, New Mexico on October 14, 2023.

In June 2023, four months prior to her disappearance, Norris was supposed to fly from North Carolina to Columbus, Ohio to visit her mother for her mother's birthday. She missed the flight, but called her mother and said she was still coming. She never arrived there, and went to New Mexico instead. She kept in touch with her mother and aunt on Facebook, but on October 14, she blocked both of them. Her last post on her Facebook page was on October 20.

The same month she disappeared, Norris had purchased a small plot of land at Tres Piedras Estates. The plot lacked a septic tank, running water or a shelter; many residents of Tres Piedras Estates live "off grid" and sometimes people with no ownership of the land squat there and "sell" properties to others. Norris's mother asked the police to do a welfare check on her daughter, and they went to the plot she'd purchased, but it appeared to have been abandoned for some time. A missing persons report was filed on November 20.

Norris's mother stated she had dropped out of sight before, but never for this long. Her mother was concerned about her mental health at the time of her disappearance and wanted to seek guardianship over her.

Her case remains unsolved.

I’m just intrigued how someone who seemingly lived a quite transient life and was receiving government support was able to buy a plot of land. I’m guessing we’re likely not talking a $200,000 prime spot on the 6th hole with lake views, but still land is going to cost a little bit, never mind all the legal costs associated. How did that happen when she was potentially in such a bad way? Did someone get her to buy it and then harm her? But what would that even achieve if it’s in her name. How very odd! There must be legal and financial documents related to the sale and her current financial transactions (if any) that would provide clues.

I would hope there’s legal documents but according to this link, it may not be the case:

We do not know if she was receiving government support. There is no information on this thread that verifies whether she was receiving aid. Many schizophrenic people do not receive any government assistance. If they are paranoid schizophrenics, they are often unwilling to apply for aid of any kind. They do not want to be labeled as mentally ill, can't perceive their own condition, and are very suspicious of government. Also, if she's transient, she may not have a bank account or any means of receiving funds.

There's .25 acres in Tres Piedras for sale for $2975. https://www.land.com/Tres-Piedras-NM/all-land/

Add in to that unscrupulous people doing lease-purchases on land they may or may not own and I bet the initial investment is quite small.
