Tammie Brooks, 41, was booked on suspicion of abandonment or abuse of a child resulting in death at Hobbs County Jail.

Investigators learned that the little girl, Zariah Hasheme, was left in Brooks’ care around 6:30 a.m. that day. Brooks was supposed to drop the girl off at daycare, but drove to her job instead and left the girl unattended in the car for hours.

Brooks later realized the child was still in the vehicle when she went to do an errand.

I'm following this one...

Was the "caregiver" (the name used in the article) a parent or someone hired by the parent(s) as a babysitter or a nanny-type person? A foster-parent? Perhaps a next-door neighbor or friend just helping out that day due to a parent's obligation for that one day?
Maybe that question has already been answered, but I'd like to know. It could make a difference in whether that day was different from any other. It made me think of what's-his-name (CRS) who was found guilty for leaving his sweet son in that baking car on purpose, and is in prison now for it. Not slinging arrows, certainly, but I did think about it. That needs to be ruled-out asap for the sake of the caregiver. This is such a sad, sad thing for everyone involved.

From the article -- "First-degree felony"
Brooks has been charged with abandonment or abuse of a child resulting in death, a first-degree felony. She was held at the Hobbs County Detention Center until a judge released her on unsecured bond.

-- Here's what I found about that charge:
First degree felony

A first degree felony is punishable by up to eighteen years in prison and a fine up to $15,000 with the following exceptions:

  • aggravated criminal sexual penetration – up to life in prison and a fine up to $17,500
  • first degree felony resulting in the death of a child – up to life in prison and a fine up to $17,500.

A serious charge, IMO. And an unforgettable and very serious tragedy -- for everyone.
