Non-Twins born to same mom, same day

  • #21
My son was born at 29 weeks and 4 days and he was only in the hospital a week and a half.

that would be a rarity for a baby to go home at thirty one weeks gestational age. babies are so unstable respiratory wise they are usually kept until at least 35 weeks gestation.

often, when a baby is born we use the Ballard scale to confirm gestational age. this tells us how mature the baby is and we can date how old the baby is using the scale. Reported maternal dates are becoming so unreliable now-a-days - many will report implantation bleeding (presumably) as the last period, especially with people saying they were "on the pill" (gives a lighter period), often people are not even keeping track of periods, or we've had people flat out lie to us in the office due to the fact they want a certain partner to think he is the baby's father.
often, we can be "off" on our due dates. when my cousins baby was born, there was a guy in there who had a 10 lb baby - in the regular nursery - who said his baby was born at "32" weeks.
Im like... BS. at this hospital, ALL 35 week babies... and below... spend at least the first few hours in the NICU for stablization. Usually only the 35 weekers will even be allowed OUT. i didn't say it to his face of course, but i was like - i am calling your bluff!!

Thanks for sharing! I just hadn't ever really heard of a preemie that young going home so soon. I'm basing it on when my sister went into pre-term labor at 29 weeks, they basically told her that if the baby was born then, it would be there for several weeks.

Glad to hear that your preemie was healthy!! :)

Thanks. He had some breathing problems and had to have a blood transfusion, but he bounced back fast.

I have problems believing that a 29 week old baby would be able to go home in 5 days. And also, I know that they aren't true twins, but I find it odd that at 32 weeks, the other baby was over 6 pounds. That is really unusual for a non-singleton pregnancy.

I wonder if anyone has tried interviewing her doctors or the hospital.

Just wanted to throw my 2cents in. My ds was born at 32 weeks 2 days, and was 6lbs 3oz. Was in the NICU for 3 weeks for under developed lungs and was septic. I had been in preterm labor for 6 weeks when he was born, and that is the reason he was septic. My OB said if he would have been full term he would have been way over 9lbs. So a premi, can be big. Not common, but can happen. He did come home from the hospital at 5lbs 8oz though.

ETA: the reason for weight loss is he had a really hard first week. Was on vent, then c-pap, back on vent. They fed him NG, but he was not digesting it. So they would feed him, then suck out and see what he was digesting, which was nothing. They tested him for Pyoric Stenosis, but found out there was something wrong with how his stomach was formed. So he had surgery at 1 week 2 days, and fixed him right up. They put him on a high calorie formual + breast milk and he gained it right back

That's quite a story snvoigt. I'm so glad your son made it through. It must have been so frightening to have your baby have surgery so young.

It happens.......as my friend found out last year that it is possible to have moe than one uterus........I should let her know that she should have sent out a press release! LOL - I still refer to the babies as twins though - but they aren't technically!
