Accuser speaks out on Henderson murder of defrocked priest

Police said officers were conducting a welfare check about 9:30 a.m. Saturday when they found the body of John Capparelli, 70, in his house in the 1400 block of Bonner Springs Drive, near Eastern Avenue and Reunion Drive.

Henderson Police declined a request for an interview but a police source told FOX5 Capparelli had a history of hiring male prostitutes.

On Feb 13, the archdiocese of New Jersey released 188 names of priests accused of abusing children, including Capparelli. Less than a month later, he was murdered.

More than two dozen men have come forward saying Capparelli abused them sexually or physically dating back to the 1970s. Multiple accusations said Capparelli made them wrestle in swimwear while he took photos.

5 disturbing facts about the disgraced former N.J. priest found shot to death in Nevada

"Years after he was accused of horrific sexual abuse by at least two dozen boys in New Jersey, it appeared John Capparelli had started over.

The former Catholic priest had moved to a two-bedroom house in a quiet neighborhood in Henderson, Nevada. Neighbors told local news reporters the 70-year-old appeared to be a friendly retiree from the East Coast. He was quiet and could often be seen walking his dogs around the neighborhood.

But on Saturday, police responding to a call to check on Capparelli’s welfare found the ex-priest shot in the neck in his kitchen. He was dead.

Nevada police have ruled the death a homicide and say they are investigating. It remains unclear if his death is related to the release last month of the names of 188 priests -- including Capparelli -- who had been “credibly accused” of sexual abuse of children.

Here are five thing we know about the ex-priest:..."

Pedophile ex-priest killed in his home reportedly hired male hookers

March 13, 2019

"The New Jersey pedophile priest who was found shot to death in his Nevada home had a history of hiring male prostitutes, and police believe he was targeted for death, according to reports and neighbors.

The Henderson Police Department outside of Las Vegas has declined to comment on John Capparelli’s “suspicious” death, which has been ruled a homicide by the Clark County Coroner, but the local Fox 5 outlet reported the disgraced and defrocked priest had a history of ordering male prostitutes, citing police sources....

The coroner’s office said they were told by the police department they could not release any details on why the death was ruled a homicide in the interest of tracking down the person responsible, but did say a relative came to the morgue to identify Capparelli’s remains on March 11, two days after he was found dead...."

Who killed a disgraced ex-priest from N.J.? Nevada police still investigating mysterious death.

More than a week after police found him shot in the neck in his house in the Nevada desert, John Capparelli’s killer remains a mystery.

Police say they are still investigating who shot the disgraced ex-priest from New Jersey in the kitchen of the well-kept house where the alleged child molester had started a new life.

“We have no additional information,” said Officer Rod Peña, a spokesman for the Henderson, Nevada, police department.

The investigation remains open, Peña added. Police have not said if they suspect if Capparelli’s killer was a stranger or someone he knew -- or if his death was related to the release last month of the former priest’s name on a list of 188 New Jersey priests and deacons “credibly accused” of past sexual abuse of children.

Suspect in shooting death of former New Jersey priest answered a Craigslist ad

"Las Vegas, Nev., Jun 7, 2019 / 05:01 pm (CNA).- The man suspected in the March shooting death of a former priest who was credibly accused of sexual abuse of minors had responded to a Craigslist ad looking for young men to wrestle, according to Nevada police....

Police discovered phone records demonstrating that Capperelli exchanged calls and texts with a number linked to Decoste between Feb. 21 and March 6.

Decoste's girlfriend told police he was “eager to make money” and so had responded to Capparelli's post seeking wrestlers, Mike Shoro of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported June 4...

The warrant said that investigators found in Capparelli's home hundreds of homemade films with “nearly-nude men wrestling inside of the home, presumably while the victim filmed them,” and indications he “often kept the company of prostitutes or paid entertainers.”

They also found a hard copy of a Craigslist ad from Capparelli seeking “young and good looking men” willing to wrestle or to compete in “submission matches.”..."

The Twisted Life and Death of a Predator Priest With a Wrestling Fetish

06.15.19

"As a New Jersey priest in the 1970s and 1980s, John Capparelli liked to arrange wrestling matches for parish boys. He gave them skimpy Speedos to wear, took pictures of them grappling, and even joined in—using the rough-housing as an excuse to sadistically grope the kids.

“Capparelli kind of played the role of being that cool adult that you hung out with,” one of his victims, Rich Fitter, told the Daily Beast last week. “I have no doubt in my mind now that he was a sociopath.”..."
