Details of Disappearance
Opal was last seen at approximately 5:00am by a family member at her residence in the 100 block of Sir David Way in Las Vegas, NV. When the family member returned at 2:00pm Opal was gone.
Her vehicle was still at the residence, the television set and lights were on and nothing but her purse was missing.
Her son believes her disappearance could be tied to other elderly crimes here in the valley.
A man was caught using Opal's ATM card after claiming to have found her purse in a dumpster. Police believe say the man may have only stumbled across Parsons' purse and cell phone in a dumpster. Parson's identification was found about a week later at a casino not far from her house.

Still, a small percentage of cases remain unsolved. Metro designates a detective to strictly work cold cases in the Missing Persons Detail, which is unheard of in other jurisdictions.

“I have a case from 1986,” Det. Dan Holley says. “There are witnesses to still speak to.”

Holley is also working on the 2008 case of Opal Parsons.

“Her car’s in the driveway. Her keys are in the house. It’s just odd. Was it a stranger or somebody she knew? She’s out there somewhere.”

Finding a resolution is what drives the department, and becoming personally attached to some case is inevitable.

“You handle this case the way you would want someone to handle a loved one,” Det. Holley says. “When we do that, I don’t think we turn any stone unturned.”

This is the reason I have visited this site off & on for a few years. Opal was my Grandfather's sister. I only recall meeting Opal once and that was at my Grandfather's funeral in 1994. It's possible I met her when I was much younger but can't recall. She was a very sweet lady from the limited time I spent with her.

I often wonder what could have happened to her and hope one day there's some closure for the family. Thanks for having this post here.

I just discovered Opal's case while looking at Steven Koecher's. Charlie project say's no dementia. Her purse was missing. Her TV was on to her favorite channel, vehicle still in driveway. No signs of struggle. It's seems she was abducted, but she went quietly. Strange.....

LV police trying to find woman missing nine days
_____________________

Investigators were able to identify the man who used Parsons’ ATM cards at Sam’s Town after she went missing. The man, whose name police did not release, said he found Parsons’ purse in a trash bin, said detective Dan Holley with the missing persons detail.

“We believe some criminal act is afoot,” Holley said.

A search warrant was conducted of the man’s house Thursday. He was interviewed into the wee hours of the morning, but police found no evidence to link him to the actual disappearance of Parsons, Holley said.

[...]

Investigators do have other persons of interest in the case.

Holley said currently detectives are trying to identify a man who was known to Parsons in her social circles. He would not be more specific, only to say that Parsons had a friendly, platonic relationship with the man.

[...]

Investigators do not believe Parsons left her home willingly. There were no signs of forced entry into her home, and police believe someone she knew or had reason to trust came to her door that morning.

Police have tried to rule out other possibilities, including Parsons walking away from her home, which was not part of her routine. She always drove her van, which was found parked perfectly in the driveway.

Earlier above it's mentioned that her ID was found at a casino not far from her house. Did Opal frequent this casino? Might she have met that person there, and he maybe he wanted more than he let on? Whoever it was, the police sound convinced that it was someone she knew, even in passing.

I feel like this sounds like a case I saw on Unsolved Mysteries where a woman met a man at a casino and he's suspected in her disappearance. I can't remember the name right now.

What is that area like? Are there places to go within walking distance or do you have to drive everywhere? I'm just wondering if he drove there and either forced her out of the house at gunpoint or lured her out. Or maybe if he invited her to walk somewhere.

To @Cagle I'm really sorry for your family's loss, I pray for answers, and I hope LE can discover who did this.

Thanks! I don't know much about the area since I live in Florida, but those are definitely good questions and thoughts. It just seems like there's been no movement in so long.

Bumping for Opal. It sounds like she was accosted and abducted while going through her morning routine at the house. News articles state that the man found using her credit cards at the casino was not thought to involved in the crime, and he told detectives that he found Opal’s purse in the trash. If he’s not responsible, who dumped her purse at the casino? When was it found? Articles also vaguely mention a male acquaintance of Opal’s who was being looked at; was this person ever found? So many questions. My heart goes out to the family. I hope this mystery is solved soon and Opal is found.

Frenchman's Mountain is on the east side - where Opal lived and went missing.
Thank you for posting this. Fingers crossed! I notice it mentions there being tendons. I wonder how long it takes tendons to break down. Admittedly I know nothing about it, but would think they'd have been long deteriorated by now.

Details of Disappearance

Parsons was last seen at approximately 5:00 a.m. on August 30, 2007 by her daughter at the residence they shared in the 100 block of Sir David Way in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was supposed to have lunch with friends at 12:30 p.m. that day, but never arrived.

When her daughter returned from work at 2:00 p.m., Parsons was gone. Her van was still at the residence with the keys inside it, and no personal belongings were missing other than her purse. She has never been heard from again.

Parsons left the television on and the door unlocked, with key inserted, when she disappeared, and she did not leave a note, which is uncharacteristic of her. She did not normally walk anywhere, preferring to drive her car instead.

She was in good physical and mental health at the time of her disappearance, had no history of dementia, and is described as an active, social woman with many friends. Her hobbies include crossword puzzles and dancing. She belonged to the Heritage United Methodist Church in 2007.

Parsons's ATM card was used at Sam's Town Casino in Las Vegas the day after she went missing. Authorities never believed Parsons used the card herself, because her image was not seen on the casino's surveillance video footage. Her driver's license and Social Security card were found lying on the floor inside the casino, near one of the exits.

Investigators identified the man who used the ATM card, but did not arrest him. They stated he found Parsons's purse and cellular phone in a trash bin and is not a suspect in her disappearance.

Investigators believe Parsons was lured away or abducted from her residence by someone she knew and trusted. There were no signs of forced entry to her home.

Parsons kept a strict routine at the time of her disappearance and it is uncharacteristic of her to leave without warning. She is not wealthy; she lived on a retirement fund and Social Security checks. Foul play is suspected in her case due to the circumstances involved.
