LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The man convicted for making a bomb that killed another man outside a Las Vegas Strip resort escaped from prison Tuesday, sources told the 8 News Now Investigators.

Porfirio Duarte-Herrera, 42, is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for murder at the Southern Desert Correctional Center, records showed.

Corrections officers determined Duarte-Herrera was missing at 7 a.m. Tuesday, officials said in a news release. A search for him began around 8 a.m.

It was not until 1 p.m. that NDOC officials issued a news release on the matter, confirming the 8 News Now Investigators’ earlier reporting.

Duarte-Herrera is described as being 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighing 135 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes.

Duarte-Herrera and another man were convicted in 2009 for the killing of a 24-year-old man who died when a bomb, hidden in a coffee cup, exploded. The incident happened inside a parking garage at the Luxor hotel in 2007.

A spokesperson for Las Vegas Metro police said the department was aware of the missing convicted murderer and officers were being vigilant.

U.S. Marshals were also assisting in the search.

A man serving a life sentence for a deadly pipe bombing outside a Las Vegas Strip casino in 2007 has escaped from prison, according to the Nevada Department of Corrections.

How did he escape? This is scary. He has absolutely nothing to lose. If he was discovered missing at 7 AM, why did the search began at 8 AM?

Sounds like a bad one is on the loose. A bit scary for locals, I'd say. Doors & windows need to be locked. Wondering if he had a plan, or if he saw an opportunity and just took it.

I have followed several jail brakes in my state, and by far, the escapees were found in a few days. Hoping this will be the case for this one as well.

In 2009, Duarte-Herrera and a second defendant, Omar Rueda-Denvers, were convicted for the death of the victim. He was Willebaldo Dorantes Antonio. He was killed after a pipe bomb exploded on the Luxor Hotel & Casino’s parking garage roof.

At the conclusion of that trial, Duarte-Herrera and Rueda-Denvers were both convicted of murder with use of a deadly weapon and attempted murder with use of a deadly weapon.

Oh wow, Porfirio has been missing since Friday!

A revised press release from NDOC on Tuesday afternoon clarified that the inmate had been "unaccounted for since approximately Friday evening."

This came after a statement from Governor Steve Sisolak revealed that an investigation by NDOC has revealed that the inmate actually went missing "earlier in the week," rather than Tuesday morning. Sisolak called the security lapse "unacceptable" and stated that "those responsible will be held accountable."

That's quite the jump isn't it? Tuesday am to Friday evening. Absolutely shocking.

I'd also like to know the circumstances of his escape. Making a bomb powerful enough to kill a human that fits in a coffee cup seems that it would take some skill. How did he get out and how much danger does he pose now that he's free? Where do they think he might be going? He could be across either border by now if he had help.

Sept 28

Tuesday afternoon, armed officers searched every car going out of the Southern Desert Correctional Center.

“I don’t know if the man is armed or what, he’s a killer isn’t he?,” questioned Anthony Lorenzo who lives nearby. Neighbors in Cold Creek Canyon are on high alert.

“He is liable to get shot by somebody if he comes around here at night,” Lorenzo contended. Word of a killer on the loose has spread quickly in the community where it is normally quiet save the livestock, sometimes doors are even left unlocked.
