Circumstances of Recovery
The decedent was reportedly found at an unknown location in Reno in 1999 in an altered level of consciousness. The decedent has been living in group homes since that time. She has given various stories of having lived in Texas, and Las Vegas. She has been using the name, Diane Ashley, with multiple birth dates, and social security numbers, none of which are associated with that name. She gave a story of being assaulted and left in the snow, which resulted in bilateral lower leg amputations. She gives her race as white, but she could be Native American, or Asian.

Fingerprints?
Dentals?
Assessment of amputation sites, especially when she entered 'the system' in 1999? Where the surgical sites fresh, a year old, 5 years old? Found with prosthetics or a wheelchair?

Sooo many questions.

Yeah, I thought there should be quite a bit more identifying info available but it wasn't given in the NamUs profile. This case certainly leaves a lot of unanswered questions.

Also, as a double amputee (esp. a supposed victim of an assault) wouldn't she qualify for disability or some kind of victim's assistance? It seems the incident and sussequent hospitalization, surgery, follow-up care, and therapy would be well-documented.

Agree!

Was she diabetic? Often contributes to problems that lead to amputation.

How should we Google? Assault Victim Left in Snowbank pre-1999?

There are also congenital & gestational conditions that generally result in disarticulation, the specific type of amputation that indicates removal at a joint. The medical records should indicate if her surgery was years ago or months ago.

If she is Native American, this may have all happened through Indian Health Service:

did LE contact this outfit in 1999?

Soooo many questions!

Yeah, seems odd to lose two lower limbs due to being "left in the snow" without losing any other body parts (fingers, ear, nose). My first thought was diabetes as well. The care homes would certainly know if she was Type I diabetic. Did they find her with a wheelchair or other assistive devices? I'd love to know more about the circumstances of her being found.

Does Catherine Chiang strike anyone as a potential candidate?

I looked at Catherine as a PM. I think it's possible she could have ended up in NV. My reservation is the height difference. At 5' 7" she'd be an inch taller than the estimated height range of Diana Ashley. Having said that, we've seen enough flukes to know this discrepancy doesn't exclude her without doing a scientific comparison.

I cannot give a worthy opinion on a visual comparison of the photos. I see it but at the same time I don't. I guess it's the aging process.

How and/or why Julie King would end up in NV is anyone's guess but I think she's a good PM. Julie went missing from FL in 1991. She would have been about 60 in 2018. Her height and weight match the estimates for Diane Ashley as does her hair and eyes. Even though Julie's pic is somewhat blurred and grainy it seems some of the facial markings are similar. Especially the bridge and tip of her nose as well as on the left side of her mouth. Lastly, I can't help but notice that left ear.

Have you heard of the story of another Jane doe with double amputations found that doesn’t remember her identity? She’s still alive, she was found in 2014 in Michigan I couldn’t help but wonder despite the distance if these two have ever been considered to be related cases? China Black
