I am a local and do not have a link but that is correct. It was a Reno/Tahoe Airport security guard that found her not a Reno Police Officer. There was that guard and at least one or two other security guards on duty that night, one of whom dropped her off at the Hilton (now the Grand Sierra). It is a very close drive as you stated above. I would be curious to know of the exact time she was found at the airport, dropped off at the Hilton and what the security guards state they were doing during the time she was in their presence.

What bothers me is that the sighting in the Sparks Casino is unconfirmed. I mean, casinos are loaded with surveillance cameras, yet all we have is someone's word.

Something I keep coming back to is the books in the car. I'd like to know the specific titles, so I could take a look at them. She was clearly having some issues, but I wonder if investigators read the books to see they may have had any insight. Of course, if you were not in your right mind and looking to disappear, going into an unauthorized area, getting the attention of security and leaving behind your personal effects with a wild story about how people are, "out to get you", may seem to make sense. I am curious if Star's information is continuously shared with the organizations that do outreach work with the homeless population in the Reno area?

I don't think it's quite as suspicious as people make it out to be. Possible timeline: 12am Call comes in tresspass on tarmac. 12:10 guard dispatched. 12:10-35 (possibly longer) locating Star who was hiding behind a truck. The rest of the time could have very well been spent trying to figure out exactly what was going on, and writing out his report. Reno is a small airport, but at night I can imagine it could still be a challenge locating someone who is hiding out on the tarmac. The (former) Hilton is very close, about 2.5 miles away, currently, Google maps puts the drive at 9 minutes.

Saw the UM segment featuring Star Palumbo. Very sad & disturbing. It sounds like Star's life had a lot of potential, but somewhere she "lost her way" and possibly fell in with a bad crowd, etc.

Unfortunately, prior to her vanishing it looks like she may have been on drugs and/or had some mental issues - which may have contributed to her disappearance.

I suspect she's probably deceased, but with no body we're not even sure of that. The other unlikely possibility is that she has become part of the homeless population somewhere, and so has fallen "off the grid" because of this. But, sadly I think it's more likely that she's passed.

Bumping up for Star. I hope she's safe out there, but it's hard to believe someone would leave that much cash behind if disappearing willingly.
I hope answers still come. Too many years have gone by...

Height: 5'4"
Weight: 125 lbs.

Characteristics: Caucasian female with Brown hair and brown eyes. She has a birthmark on the right side of her neck. She also has multiple piercings in each ear.

Case
Details: In the early morning hours of April 26, 2000, a young woman was spotted wandering in a restricted area of the Reno/Tahoe International Airport and appeared to be disoriented and frightened. An airport police officer eventually found her cowering near a truck. She identified herself as Star Palumbo and said she was trying to find her younger sister, who was running around on the tarmac. Although the officer did not believe her story was true, he didn't feel she had any criminal intent. She was dropped off at the nearby Reno Hilton Hotel and Casino where she vanished.
The next day, Star's illegally parked car was found abandoned at the airport. It was filled with her personal possessions, including her cell phone and purse which had $600 in cash. She had left behind other items that caused great concern, including copies of three e-mails sent to the White House which indicated that she thought that the government was trying to kill her. Also, a morbid drawing of a woman who looked like her being bound and gagged was found. Finally, there were two books about how to change one's identity.
Star never returned to claim her car and remains missing; two theories have emerged as to what happened to her. The first is that she is suffering from some organic-based or drug-induced psychosis and doesn't know who or where she is. The second theory is that she met with foul play. The mystery of what happened to her started long before she vanished. She was once a vivacious woman filled with promise, but one year before she vanished she moved from her Tucson, Arizona home to her grandmother's in Reno. Investigators believe that while she was there is when her life began to go off course.
According to Star's friends, in the weeks prior to her disappearance, she developed a drug habit that cost more than she could make at her job. Police suspect that she may have gone into prostitution in order to get more money. While in Reno, she continued to call her mother, Gail, on a weekly basis and was always in good spirits except for on the day she vanished. She told her mother that she believed that she was being the followed, that the phone was tapped, and that her life was in danger. She was planning to escape this and return to Tucson, but she never did and Gail never heard from her again.
Following Star's disappearance, her parents went around Reno looking for her and placed flyers all around the city. Linda Fields, owner of the Silver Dollar Casino in Elko, claimed to have seen her there eight months after she vanished. The woman, who look frightened, said that her name was Star and that she was being chased by a pimp. Linda claims that Star was very nervous when a man peered into the window. A short time later, she left with an unknown woman. Authorities don't know if that was actually her or what has happened to her.
Suspects: None known. Police believe that, if Star met with foul play, she may have been killed by someone involved with prostitution or drugs. Unsubstantiated rumors have claimed that she died of a drug overdose and her body was dumped in the desert.
Star's friends told police that she was trying to change her identity in order to hide from people that she owed drug money to. It is not known if she successfully changed her identity or went into hiding. It is also not known if the people she owed money to are considered suspects.
Extra Notes: This case first aired on the October 15, 2001 episode.
Results: Unsolved

I believe she is alive. Nevada has an unclaimed money state website and she has a particularly unique unclaimed fund. PCH requires proof of identification and accurate contact and address verification before issuing prizes which are rewarded either by mail or in person. Some prizes are split between several winners which would explain the small amount. It would have been a check that was not cashed within the <180 days or wtvr expiration of checks law is but less than a year for sure. The unclaimed money is then reported to and held by the state. As a resident of Nevada I have personally had unclaimed money on this state website which I have had an accurate reported fund and I have gone through the process of claiming and receiving the property so I know that it is legitimate and accurate. Her unclaimed property was reported 14 years after she was reported to be missing and because of where it is from she had to be alive closer to 2014. The address is her grandmother's where she was known to have been living at.

Bump for Star. She has multiple piercings in each ear and a birthmark on the right side of her neck.

She was wearing a black leather jacket, a tank top, blue jeans and boots.

No new exclusions.

There needs to be an age progression for Star. Using a photo that’s 26 years old is of no help if she is still alive and out there now at 51 years old + several years of drug use which will have a significant impact on her appearance. She could be anywhere in the US.

I think she died shortly after the sighting in December 2000, hence there was never any other accounts.

I know people are hesitant as to the validity of the sighting, due to CCTV not being present. However, the woman working in the casino said the lady identified herself as Star and of her being in a distressed state. I don’t see why someone would lie about that.

Who was the lady Star left the casino with? The casino worker says she entered the casino in a very distressed state alone but left in the company of a woman. Was this woman someone already in the casino or someone within the prostitution ring connected to the man peeping through the glass?

The detail of the man looking in from the outside is pretty distressing. If it were Star in the casino, she claimed he was her pimp and following her. We know Star was involved in sex work - there were several numbers in her phone book relating to various strange men.

I imagine she would’ve been too much to handle for the prostitution ring and either died at the hands of those in it or else from an overdose. I don’t see how she could’ve spent several years on drugs and prostitution given how distressed she became in such a short amount of time from this activity.

I’ve no idea how this works but would it be worth forwarding this on to the police? This would at least confirm she was alive in the mid 2000s.

I don’t really understand this site as I’m not from the US, surely her family would be aware of this unclaimed money or it would be flagged to authorities?
