At a news conference, Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill said a vehicle fire was reported at the hotel just after 8:40 a.m. Crews arrived to find a 2024 Cybertruck engulfed in flames, he said.

“There is one deceased individual inside the Cybertruck and I don’t know whether it is a male or a female at this time,” McMahill said.

Seven other victims sustained what McMahill described as “minor” injuries as a result of the explosion.

Jeremy Schwartz, acting special agent in charge of the FBI in Las Vegas, also confirmed that his team is involved in the investigation.

In a post on X, Elon Musk wrote Tesla is also launching its own investigation.

“The whole Tesla senior team is investigating this matter right now,” Musk wrote. “We’ve never seen anything like this.”

The explosion is now being investigated as a possible terrorist attack, three senior members of law enforcement briefed on the matter told NBC News. A motive has yet to be established.

In Las Vegas, witness Ana Bruce, visiting from Brazil, said she heard three explosions.

“The first one where we saw the fire, the second one, I guess, was the battery or something like that, and the third was the big one that smoked the entire area and was the moment when everyone was told to evacuate and stay away,” Bruce said.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) worked with federal agencies to determine whether a mechanical malfunction, a deliberate act, or external factors caused the explosion. According to an official briefed on the investigation, the Cybertruck was carrying fireworks-style mortars, raising concerns about potential foul play.

what a wild start to 2025.... would be really curious to find out what the motive is. That it was outside the Trump hotel and in a Cybertruck suggests to me it *could* be targeted and/or commentary on the political relationship between Trump and Musk. I'm not sure either way. JMO

I have not heard any reports on the person deceased inside the truck. It's too early to draw conclusions but I wonder if it was an attack attempt that failed and the deceased person was involved.

Is that a hotel owned by Donald T. or one that has leased the branding?

According to Wikipedia, it's owned 50% by the Trump Organization and 50% by Phil Ruffin.
300 of the condos are owned by Hilton Grand Vacations, so there are 3 owner organizations. Hilton Grand Vacations Club at Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada

They don't even know the person's gender.

It seems that every article is "different" and there is not much info from LE.

It seems like Elon Musk is quoted extensively.

They say fireworks-style mortars, those are pretty big. Lots of pics on google and banned in some places.

The Tesla Cybertruck that caught fire and exploded outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas Wednesday, killing the sole occupant, was rented in Colorado and driven to Nevada, according to Kevin McMahill, sheriff of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

McMahill said investigators were able to track the truck’s journey from Colorado to Las Vegas as the driver stopped at charging stations along the route. It's unclear where in Colorado the Tesla was rented.

Police say gas containers and “firework mortars” were visible in the bed of a Tesla Cybertruck that exploded outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas early Wednesday, killing the vehicle’s occupant—an unexplained incident police are reportedly probing as a possible terrorist act, just hours after a truck attack in New Orleans.

The truck was rented in Colorado and arrived in the city Wednesday morning, less than two hours before the detonation, police said. Parked in front of the hotel near a glass entrance, the vehicle started to smoke, then exploded.
