Report: Cops looking into whether skeletal remains are of marathon runner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Investigators are probing whether the skeletal remains found last weekend in Brooklyn near the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge are of a runner in the New York City Marathon, according to CBS New York.

The human remains were garbed in pants and sneakers typically worn by runners, a spokesman for the NYPD confirmed.

CBS2 said that the body was wrapped in a heat-foil blanket such as the type handed out to marathon runners.

A police spokesman was unable to provide any information about whether the death was linked to the marathon.

A maintenance worker cutting some weeds made the gruesome discovery.

Authorities still are working to determine a cause of death and identify the remains, which were found around 8 a.m. on Saturday morning underneath the Gowanus and 92nd Street overpass.

I've known three people who have run in the spring marathon, and using their identifying number, I was able to track their progress live through a website.

If that can be done, surely there's a way to compare a list of people who started the race vs. those who finished it.

Authorities discovered two different sets of human remains during a ghoulish 90-minute span Saturday morning in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

MTA Bridge and Tunnel Authority workers discovered the partially clothed skeletal remains around 8 a.m. near Fort Hill Place and Dahlgren Place in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, cops said.

The maintenance crew came across the bones while they were cleaning up debris inside a grassy, wooded area near the Brooklyn-bound exit for the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, sources familiar with the case told the Post.

The victim appeared to be wearing a blue shirt, dark-colored pants and sneakers at the time of death, the sources said.

This is crazy. A comment after that article pointed out that the blankets are handed out at the end of the race, not the beginning. So this could have been a finisher. But the marathon was in November and remains were skeletal. Someone must have been missing this person who never came home after running a marathon last fall! Was there a missing person reported from last year’s marathon? Wow. Surely if this was a runner it won’t be too hard to find out who it is.

Incredible that the two bodies would be found in such a short time span. If a runner was missing, I am surprised no one was looking for them.

That picture of the remains in the NY Post article is disturbing.

Something like a list of everyone who was registered...hmm

The tags they wear have RFID chips in them- I wonder if it is lying nearby

Those blankets are also $1.00 at Walmart and part of almost every first aid kit. This could be a complete coincidence and not related to the marathon at all.

It looks like the route starts in Brooklyn and ends in Manhattan, and the remains were found in Brooklyn (toward the beginning of the race.) This makes me think it is likely not to be a marathon runner. Because why would he/she have a blanket at the start?
So sad though. I wonder if there are homeless people living around that bridge?

Maybe this runner flew in from another country for the marathon and their family doesn't know how to report them missing here.

I wonder what their shirt says.

It looks like the wording on the top starts with a large F perhaps followed by an O.
speculation, imo.

The pic in the Post article shows a decomposed body with street clothes on, and no silver blanket. Does not appear this was a runner in his marathon clothes to me.

I'm sure there are many brands, but the first that came to my mind is "Fabco."

They sell shoes, and admittedly I haven't been able to find an online pic of t-shirt branded with their logo. But I feel like I've seen them here in NYC. And if you compare the t-shirt which clearly has an F, followed by a round letter and a line underneath them, I think it lines up with the Fabco logo below.

The body found by the Brooklyn Bridge (Manhattan) in the East River was covered by the NYPD Harbor Police their blanket. That area has nothing to do with the marathon or the blanket the Harbor Police used to cover the body. That came from the Harbor Police supplies.

The Body found in Bay Ridge which is by the Verrazzano Bridge has parks and running & bike paths all along the water that runs for miles. There are little marathon runs that take place all summer on these running paths by the water.

Here is the area the Blue tee body was found. Remember the NYC Marathon is a widely and highly publicized world event if someone was missing we would have known about it. If someone fell to their death someone would have seen it. The runners come off a ramp and right into the Bay Ridge Neighborhood. They run high above the area and over the parks and paths.

This is a dead guy dumped in the park , died while in the park, killed in the parks or pathways, died running a small marathon along the water. Maybe got hit by a car at night and thrown from the ramp.

I think a moderator needs to change the title, body was not found in a foil blanket. That body was covered by Harbor Police which was found in the water under the Brooklyn Bridge. That is a totally different case, the 2 are being confused with each other because the NY Post combined the 2 bodies found in the same article. WS Title is misleading. I live in NYC I know the logistics.

I'm not so sure. That first photo where the other body is covered looks nothing like a heat foil blanket to me. It looks like a body bag. Perhaps the foil blanket found with these remains was removed prior to the photo. Or it may be there but covered in dirt and partially degraded. I see something that could be the foil blanket. MOO.

See circled part of image below. (Warning GRAPHIC)

Thank you Gardener. The newspaper article states he was found in a silver blanket, so maybe he was. I zoomed in on the body found under the Brooklyn Bridge it looks like a black body bag. Other wise it looks silver with the sun on it. The body looks mangled laying across the log, not someone cozening up with a foil blanket. Unless he landed on it with his blanket on. NYPD Investigating Whether Body Found Near Verrazano Bridge Was NYC Marathon Runner

Four facts that may change that analysis:

1. The body was found with a broken pelvis consistent with a fall.
2. The body was found in an enclosed area surrounded by high fences, and thus most likely would have entered from above (i.e., fallen) rather than popping over.
3. The aluminum foil was found NEAR the body, but not on it, meaning that it could have fallen independently.
4. The body lacked the identification number or chip that every marathoner would have had.

Another article in AM NY, he was wearing a Blue baseball cap, also confirms the above 4 facts.
Human skeleton found under Verrazzano exit ramp: NYPD

From the article:

"... the skeleton didn’t have the usual runners bib embossed with an identification number or electronic tag to monitor an athlete’s progress over the 26.2-mile course, said the police spokesman.

According to the NYPD, no runners were listed as missing following the November 2018 race..."

I think this pretty much rules out marathon runner. But the decedent does appear to have been there from about that time period, since the clothing hadn't suffered damage severe enough for longer than one winter cycle, according to the article.

We didn't really get that cold of a winter here in New York. How long would a cadaver become skeletonized here?
