Carol Ann Fitzmaurice was murdered inside her home in October of 1970. She was found stabbed to death on her living room floor; her husband Dan made the gruesome discovery when he arrived home from work at around six. Carol had been stabbed 14 times and a knife discovered nearby in a creek was believed to have been the murder weapon. The autopsy report revealed that she was not sexually assaulted.

During the morning, Carol had been at work. She worked for Dr. Webster, as a nurse at his osteopathic practice. At about noon, she left and had lunch with her parents in Olean. She was last seen alive at about 1:00 in the afternoon. An uncooked chicken was still in the oven, clearly indicating that she had been killed before starting dinner. Some sources write that she was surprised by the intruder and managed to put up a struggle. Other sources highlight that there was no sign of a break-in. Between 4:20 and 5:55, Melvin P. was across the road in the barn owned by the family. He stored his horses there and during this time, he was tending to them. He reported that he did not hear or notice anything out of the ordinary.

Detectives received information that a young man driving a red or maroon fastback car was seen in the area and near the home on the day of the murder. A sketch was released but the man was never identified.

Carol's husband Dan had a strong alibi and was at work during the day. He died in a motorcycle accident a few years later and is buried next to his wife.

Numerous leads were chased down but police never made any arrests nor did they announce a possible motive. DNA was reportedly collected and there's always a chance that they can find a match based on what they have.

Cold Case Tuesday: The New York State Police in Olean continue to investigate the 1970 murder of Carol A. Fitzmaurice in the town of Allegany, NY.

On October 20, 1970, Carol A. Fitzmaurice, age 23, was found murdered at her residence of 2678 West Five Mile Road in the town of Allegany, NY. The victim was found by her husband, Daniel Fitzmaurice, when he returned home from work. The deceased was stabbed multiple times in her abdomen and neck, during a struggle in the living room of the residence.

During a search of the surrounding area the apparent murder weapon, a carving knife believed to be from the residence, was discovered in a creek behind the home (pictured).

The investigation is ongoing. While State Police have continued to receive tips and information pertaining to the circumstances surrounding the incident, the identity of the perpetrator(s) of this crime are unknown.

Nearly five decades later, the murder of Carol Ann Fitzmaurice still haunts retired State Police Investigator J. Thomas Stofer.

Every once in awhile, his mind races back to Oct. 20, 1970, and the unanswered questions that still puzzle and distress him.

Why would anyone walk into a house in Cattaraugus County farm country and brutally stab a 23-year-old nurse who had no known enemies? Did the killer know her?

Why was nothing stolen? What was the motive?

Who was the thin, narrow-faced man that a witness spotted near the isolated Town of Allegany home around the time the young victim was murdered?

"This was one of those cases that haunts you for the rest of your life," said Stofer, now 82, who was at the crime scene that day and spent more than 30 years looking for the killer. "When you look at the ferocity of the attack – a woman stabbed again and again – you think there had to be a personal reason behind it…There was no evidence of a sexual attack. We never found out who did it, and never found out why."

"That crime really put a scare into the people of this community," recalled Michael L. Nenno, a retired county judge who knew Fitzmaurice's parents. "A nice young woman, brutally murdered in her own home in the middle of the day…and someone got away with it."

But State Police investigators have not given up on solving the crime.

Last week, they issued a "Cold Case" news release, urging anyone with information about the case to call Investigator John Zeigler at (716) 372-2550.

Fitzmaurice's brother, who lives in Olean, declined to comment, telling a reporter he never talks about the murder.

Fitzmaurice was a woman of "startling beauty" from a good family, recalled Stofer, the retired trooper. Her husband, Daniel Fitzmaurice, was three years older than she. He worked for a contracting business run by his family. Her father, Gerald A. Manzo, was a decorated World War II hero, who served as an Army medic on battlefields all over Europe. He worked at the Dresser Rand plant in Olean and was a state champion skeet shooter. Her mother, Catherine Manzo, was a secretary to the Cattaraugus County health commissioner. Gerald Manzo died in 2011 and his wife died in 2014, never knowing why their daughter was viciously murdered.

Fitzmaurice worked as an office nurse for Dr. F. Gerald Webster, an Olean osteopath. On her final day, she worked until about noon, then had lunch in Olean and spent time with her parents, police said after the murder.

Her husband found Carol Ann's body, lying face-up on the living room floor, when he returned home around 6 p.m. Police said she had been stabbed 14 times, in her throat abdomen and upper body.

An uncooked chicken was found in the oven, police said, indicating that Fitzmaurice was getting dinner ready shortly before she was attacked. Troopers found the murder weapon, a long-bladed knife, in a shallow creek about 300 yards behind the Fitzmaurice home on West Five Mile Road, a few miles north of Olean and about 70 miles south of Buffalo.

There were no indications of problems between Carol Ann and her husband, but Stofer said police investigated Daniel Fitzmaurice's whereabouts at the time of the murder. They determined he was working in Jamestown at the time she was killed, more than an hour away. Giardini agreed that Daniel Fitzmaurice – who died in a motorcycle accident about a year after the slaying – was cleared as a suspect...

I drove by that house one time. Not to be cliche, but it gave me the chills. This case just sticks with me.

Beautiful woman stabbed repeatedly but not sexually assaulted, maybe the perp is someone who is very jealous of CF?

In the water. was that luck, or someone send them there to look. car parked 200 yards away, so perhaps that is why they checked the river there. The killer could have already been in the house when she arrived home that day. And he killed her for the thrill of it. One of the suspected victims of CRV Killer, Lynda Moore, was also found by her husband on the floor of their home stabbed to death. Many of the victims were nurses or hospital employees, he always stabbed them in the chest and abdominal area. I personally don’t think all the murders attributed to him were necessarily done by him.

And he killed her for the thrill of it. But not planned it, if in fact she was killed with a knife; from inside the house.

Exactly, the murderer didn't come to the house prepared to kill. And with no sign of a break-in he likely knocked on the door and forced himself in when she answered it.
Interesting that he would have had to go to the kitchen to get the carving knife.... yet he killed her in the living room.

The road there isn't very wide and is rural and quiet. What a shame the man who was tending to his horses in the field opposite heard or saw nothing.

It seems a strange place to drive for a random killing, so I think the killer knew her, and knew she'd be alone. She may have even known him and invited him in, unless he knocked on the door and barged in.

If I recall correctly, he had a cardio-pulminary problem. I don't think it was a heart attack, but it was something along those lines.
