February 9, 2018 2:19PM EST Emergency crews in Lake Placid, New York are continuing to search for a 49-year-old Toronto firefighter who disappeared while on a skiing trip earlier this week.
Constantinos ‘Danny’ Filippidis was last seen sometime between 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday while skiing on Whiteface Mountain.
New York State Police say that crews have been searching for Filippidis since he was reported missing late Wednesday afternoon.

They say that about 140 people are out searching for Filippidis, who they describe as an intermediate skier

The Toronto Professional Fire Fighters’ Association (TPFFA) told Global News Thursday that Filippidis went to the village, most known for hosting the 1980 Winter Olympics, for vacation and was joined by friends, family and other off-duty and retired firefighters.
TPFFA president Frank Ramagnano said the group was skiing down Whiteface Mountain when they noticed he never made it down the hill after the chairlifts shut down at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

State officials said they started a search at 4:30 p.m. led by Department of Environmental Conservation forest rangers in co-ordination with New York State Police and Whiteface Mountain staff.

State police are asking skiers and snowboarders at Whiteface Mountain to report anything out of the ordinary.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the mountain’s ski patrol or call the New York State Police at 518-873-2750.

"The search is continuing today for Danny. We have 96 people on the ground involved with the search today," Lundin said.

"We've been starting the searches a little bit after 8 o'clock in the morning and they've been ending as soon as the last assignment has been brought down the mountain.

"We're encouraging people to be on the lookout for Danny, and if they do see something that may be out of the ordinary, to come down to our ski patrol and notify them and or notify the New York State Police," he said.

"The circumstances regarding this case are under investigation, and further details will be released at a later time," the police statement said.

Shortly after police issued their statement, Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg said Filippidis's colleagues "are all very relieved to know that he is safe" following the search.

"Although details are limited at this time, we have been advised that he is in the care of police in Sacramento," Pegg's statement, released over Twitter, said.

"As this is now the subject of an ongoing investigation, I am unable to provide further comment."
Frank Ramagnano, president of the Toronto Professional Fire Fighters Association (TPFFA), said in a statement that Filippidis made contact with his wife earlier this afternoon.

"She was communicating with him from the Command Centre and the State Police were working to try and secure his safety," Ramagnano's statement said.

In ski clothes in Sac for the last week?? There's no way that could have been comfortable or even something someone would do on purpose. It's been in the mid 60's the last week there.

“We are just relieved that he has been found. It’s a confusing situation, but we will have to let the local authorities (in Sacramento) deal with that,” Frank Ramaganona, spokesman for the Toronto Fire Fighters Association, said Tuesday.
“All I know is he was found in a confused and dazed condition and is receiving medical attention. His family is happy and flying down to meet him,” said Ramaganona, who was one of the local volunteers who travelled to Whiteface to help in the search.

Frank Ramagnano, president of the Toronto Professional Fire Fighters’ Association, told 680 NEWS Filippidis called his wife from California on Tuesday afternoon because it was the only number he could remember. He was found in the same clothes he had been wearing when he went missing.

His belongings were found in the lodge and his vehicle was still in the parking lot when he disappeared.

Belongings and vehicle still in NY so, how did he get 3,000 miles away? How was he purchasing food? Where was he staying? Goodness, the more questions I think of the more questions I think of.

Filippidis was found alone, still wearing his snow pants, jacket and had his goggles and ski helmet when police officers responded to his call from just outside California’s capital.

How or why he’d travelled across the United States without telling anyone remains a mystery.

“He wasn’t able to give those answers,” said Frank Ramagnano, president of the Toronto Professional Fire Fighters Association, who added that Filippidis seemed confused and needed medical help.

What happened to Filippidis in those six days remains unclear.

American authorities were in possession of the man’s passport, so it was unlikely he flew to California, Ramagnano said.

The Olympic Regional Development Authority, which runs the Whiteface ski centre, was leading the search. Ramagnano thanked police officers from New York and California departments, Customs and Border Protection, and the Department of Homeland Security for their efforts.

Officials say more than 140 people spent a combined 7,000 hours searching the rugged mountain terrain, calling in helicopters and search dogs to assist.

“We are all very relieved to know that he is safe, following what has been an exhaustive search operation,” said Toronto fire chief Matthew Pegg.
