Chayanne Mendez Rodriguez, 29, is facing murder charges for his alleged role in Darwin Santana-Gonzalez’s death two days after Christmas last year. Rodriguez was one of three people in the apartment when the child died and is believed to be the father’s cousin. Cops grabbed Rodriguez at JFK Airport early Saturday as he returned to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic.
The tot’s mother, 23-year-old Daira Santana-Gonzalez, was arrested in May, accused of killing her son after discovering the unresponsive child lying in his bed at their University Place home. The baby was pronounced dead a short time later at St. Barnabas Hospital.
Darwin’s death was ruled a homicide in March after an autopsy discovered the narcotics (cocaine, heroin and fentanyl) in his system.
Santana-Gonzalez’s estranged husband, Antonio Modesto Gonzalez, who was allegedly dealings drugs out of the apartment, disappeared after his son’s death and remained on the run Saturday.
