Attica farmer killed when 'fight got out of hand' (Buffalo News)

ATTICA – Charlene M. Mess killed her husband when “a fight got out of hand,” a police source told The Buffalo News.

Two civilians in a large search party found Douglas W. Mess's body in a manure and compost pile Monday evening, and troopers later charged his wife of 30 years with murder.

The 52-year-old Wyoming County farmer was reported missing shortly before noon Monday by his children, after he failed to show up for work at another farm, and authorities first believed that they were searching for someone with medical needs.

“You won’t find anybody who didn’t like him, you won’t find anybody who didn’t respect him, you won’t find anybody he didn’t get along with,” said owner Bill Baskin.

Baskin described Mess as one of the best people you’d want to be around, personally or professionally. He said three of Mess’ four sons also work for Baskin Livestock, and they were practically part of the family.

Among those searching was Mess’ wife of 30 years, Charlene, who saddled up her horse to look for him on their sprawling farm.

Investigators believe that Charlene Mess struck her husband with some kind of blunt instrument, killing him, during a fight at their farmhouse Sunday night, the source said. She then loaded the body into a skid steer to carry it to a manure and compost pile about 300 yards behind the farmhouse and barns, the police source said.
