NY NY - Edna Kaminski, 23, Maspeth, Queens, Aug 1944

I do wonder who knows what. On Ancestry there is a family tree showing John Kaminski marrying Edna A Sarter (b1921) in 1937, with their son Franklin born the following year. This is supported by marriage records and birth records for each. The odd thing is that the tree shows Edna dying in Michigan circa December 1968 - but with no supporting sources. Whether this is good information or someone's speculation is not clear.

From John Kaminski obit there was a Jo Ann Comas listed with Franklin, from that I found Jo Ann Sarter with Franklin in 1950 census living with grandparents. Looks like the daughter mentioned in the doe Network

It does tie in with the Ancestry trees listing her as dying in Michigan in 1968. However it does not explain the police interest if she was confirmed as dying there in 1968. It seems that Michigan is a common point of interest but what happened and has led to the involvement of Michigan police is unclear.

I came across this Edna Thompson buried at Hart Island died 6-25-1980 at the age of 60 which is what I Believe this Edna's age would of been. She passed away in NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases. Could it have been she walked away from her life and changed her name?

Hart Island is essentially New York City's potter's/pauper's field. The remains of more than one million people are buried on Hart Island, though since the first decade of the 21st century, there are fewer than 1,500 burials a year. Burials on Hart Island include individuals who were not claimed by their families or did not have private funerals; the homeless and the indigent; and mass burials of disease victims.

I followed up on this lead and did deep diving research. Edna Thompson DOB 14-May-1912 (Born in Virginia? Social Security says she received her SSI card before 1951 in Virginia. She died June 1980 exact date not on SSDI-Social Security Death Index. Age 68 10035 New York City, New York, New York. I mentioned this because of this information listed above. Was she White or Black buried at Hart Island? This matters because the information from the 1950 census for this birthdate mentions that she is black. This comes from Ancestry.com, Familysearch.com and SSDI. I have SSI number, but not posting it, privacy reasons.

This is a strange and interesting case of Disappearance. Great research done in attempting to find documentation and records.

It seems that Edna Anne (Starter) Kaminski, wife of John Kaminski, and mother of son Franklin and daughter Jo Anne went missing in August 1944.

Her husband John entered the service three months later (during WW II) and served from 21 November 1944 to 13 January 1946. Edna's parents became the guardians of the children.

It is possible that John volunteered for military service, since as a single parent of two small children, he could have been exempt from the draft. If he was indeed divorced by 1950, there would be a divorce record somewhere which stated a reason, such as his wife being missing and declared dead?

The part about Edna Kaminski being dead in 1968 and the state of Michigan being involved is strange. Could it be that some sort of joint property or inheritance issue needed to be resolved?
