'BAY SHORE, NY — An arrest has been made in one of Long Island's "most brutal cold cases" more than two decades later, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney announced Thursday.
The violent beating and murder of 88-year-old Edna Schubert at her Bay Shore home in December 2003 has been solved thanks to "modern forensic technology and determined detective work," the DA said in a statement.'

''Schubert, 88, was beaten to death by an intruder at her North Bay Shore residence on Fredrick Avenue on Dec. 12, 2003, The New York Times reported. The retired Department of Motor Vehicles employee, who lived alone since her husband died years prior, died from a violent assault, police told the outlet.
Additional details surrounding the arrest are expected to be revealed during a press conference with Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney following a court proceeding in Riverhead on Friday afternoon, Feb. 7.''

Fingerprints, blood, and DNA evidence from pantyhose and a white shirt matched 51-year-old Raul Ayala, whose prints were in the database from a prior DWI.

"It was learned that the defendant was alive and was living in Georgia," Tierney said. "He was 29 years of age at the time of the murder. Back in 2003, the defendant lived just around the corner from Mrs. Schubert, less than 200 yards away."

Ayala appeared shocked when brought from Georgia to Suffolk County and indicted for Schubert's murder.

''A sign language interpreter was brought into the proceeding because the suspect does not hear or speak. After pleading not guilty, he's being held without bail. ''

"A shoe print impression was neatly visible on Ms. Schubert's neck, face in a herringbone pattern," Abouladfia said. An autopsy at the time revealed she was badly beaten to death. She sustained facial, sternum, ribs, thyroid bone, and thyroid cartilage fractures, in addition a a laceration to the collateral artery, Abouladfia added.''

''While authorities collected evidence, the case eventually went cold. However, 20 years after Schubert died, a retired detective named Pasquale Albergo decided to take another look at Schubert's case.''

Blurry photo solves 20-year-old cold murder case

''SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. (WKRC/CNN Newsource) - A blurry photo deemed unusable by detectives decades ago became the key piece of evidence that solved a 20-year-old cold murder case and led to an arrest.''

''Forensic technology changed greatly in the following decades, which recently allowed detectives to reopen the case and reexamine the once useless blurry fingerprint photo. Utilizing new technology, police connected the fingerprint to 51-year-old Raul Ayala, who once lived just around the corner from Schubert.''

Detectives did what they could, taking photos of the crime scene, including a blurry photo of a fingerprint and forensic evidence throughout the home (like blood splatters). There was nothing investigators could do with their limited information, so the case went cold for over 20 years

Ayala was arrested on suspicion of murder, but pled not guilty in his initial court appearance on Friday.
