"GUILDERLAND, N.Y. -- A couple originally from China and their two elementary school-age boys were found fatally stabbed and bludgeoned in their modest suburban home just over a year ago.

Investigators since then have run into language barriers, cultural differences and the logistical challenge of a quadruple murder case with tendrils running through Manhattan's Chinatown and possibly beyond. They've looked at an eerily similar family slaying in Mississippi and have reached out across the nation and the globe.

The investigation remains wide open.

"There's nothing that we're not looking at," New York state police Senior Investigator John Camp said recently. "We're trying to see: Is it human trafficking? Is it money laundering? Is it gang related? We're basically leaving no leaf unturned."

Police were called to the small home on a busy commercial road on Oct. 8, 2014. Inside were the bodies of Jin Chen, 39, his wife, Hai Yan Li, 38, and their sons: 10-year-old Anthony and seven-year-old Eddy. Police later said the victims were stabbed and attacked with a hammer."

"Investigators seeking insights have reached out to police in cities with large Asian populations, including Chicago, Los Angeles and Montreal. They have worked with New York City police and the FBI. They have made indirect contact with law enforcement in China, mostly through the State Department, Camp said.

And they have talked to police in D'Iberville, Mississippi, north of Biloxi, where there was a separate, unsolved murder of a Chinese family. The 2011 Mississippi case involves the fatal stabbing of a couple who owned a Chinese restaurant and the wife's sister.

While there are similarities, police have not found a connection between the New York and Mississippi murders."

"Chen handled large amounts of black-market cash as part of the off-the-books economy that moves undocumented Chinese restaurant workers around the region, according to the newspaper.

Investigators believe Chen ran a weekly card game and reportedly had $100,000 in gambling debts, but all of the people he owed money to have alibis for when the family was stabbed, law-enforcement sources told the Post.

The principal at the school attended by the two slain boys — ages 7 and 10 — said they were well-liked by teachers and classmates, and were both members of the school gardening club."

This is the Chinese connection to the Sun family murdered in Texas.

An unprecedented graft investigation into former top Communist Party official Zhou Yongkang has triggered wild speculation about the massive wealth allegedly amassed by him.

But it is likely that only a small amount of the alleged wealth, if any, can be linked directly to Zhou. As head of the family, Zhou did not get directly involved in business deals. His protection was layers of insulation between himself and the operations.

At least 37 companies, spreading as far as North America, are either owned by Zhou's family or connected to it, according to corporate documents studied by the South China Morning Post. The businesses include oil production, property development, hydropower, tourism and many more. Reuters earlier reported that the total amount of assets held by the family could be as much as 90 billion yuan, although others expressed doubts over the figure.

"If it is really the case, it's horrifying. Scholars have long been saying 'grey income' and money from corruption together account for more than 30 per cent of China's GDP, but that's too much," said Hu Xingdou , a political commentator at the Beijing Institute of Technology.

The name "Zhou Yongkang", however, does not appear in the thousands of pages of corporate documents the Post has studied.

How awful and strange! The two Sun boys are also similar in ages to the boys in this case, although the Sun family were apparently shot execution style.imo.

A Chinese family, all adults, were murdered (blunt force by hammer) in San Francisco back in 2012. A man was arrested a few days later. At the prelim just this past March, it was said the suspect murdered the family to steal money from their house to pay back a gambling debt.

At Tuesday’s press conference in Guilderland, Coburn said the murder scene at the bungalow on Guilderland’s Western Avenue “looked like nothing I’d ever seen before.” Asked to elaborate, he said, “Just the fact that it was an entire family, with children.”

In D’Iberville, Mississippi, three adult members of a Chinese family were killed on October 5, 2011 — husband and wife, Rong Chen, 40, and Mei Rong Li, also 40, and the wife’s sister, Mei Jin Li, 53. The husband and wife were the owners of a local restaurant called Chinese Happiness, according to D’Iberville’s Captain of Operations Terry Hines.

He told The Enterprise that he and an FBI agent are still at work on the case. Hines spoke about the case frankly and wrote in a follow-up email, “If you have any other questions please ask. You never know where new information could come from to break a case wide open.”

The bodies in D’Iberville were discovered by a 10-year-old family member, Hines said. The victims in that case had been stabbed.

“We have always believed that it was a professional hit, but at this time I have no way of proving the theory,” said Hines.

Investigators on his case think that it “stretches all the way up to New York,” said Hines. They believe, he said, that “the people who did this” came to Mississippi from New York City. “But we just haven’t been able to prove that yet.”

The Sun family members were found in beds too. The Texas sheriff also said something similar during the last presser as Garcia - about seeing the children every time they blink.

Hmm. Homicides like this are starting to show a blip on the crime statistics radar.

If like all similar homicides before this, involving Chinese nationals (immigrants or permanent residents) being brutally murdered on North American soil, then the profile will show that it is possibly committed by another Chinese national(s), also likely an immigrant or permanent resident. Often times the perpetrator will be a family, friend, or an acquaintance from the victim's social circle. Oddly, there has been lots of such homicides in the past few years for some reason.

Just something to be cognizant of. It will not surprise me if this was the case also. Should probably narrow the list of suspects based off this profile.

"Carol Lawlor grew up near the murder scene. Since 2008, she's been Guilderland's police chief.

"Not one of us goes down Western Avenue without that coming to mind, because there it is — it's right there," Lawlor said of the house on Guilderland's broad main artery. "I know that it still plays heavily on the minds and hearts of the community, and the police department."

Lawlor has 38 years in law enforcement; her deputy Curtis Cox has 32 years. Neither has ever seen anything like the 2014 killings, crimes Lawlor said she thinks about daily.

"Literally I don't go out to the grocery store or any place without someone (asking), 'Hey, how's that going? Are you moving on that at all?'" she said.

When Cox heard of the killings in Troy, "It brought it back for us just like it probably brings it back for the people in the community ... because of the similarities."

"The Times Union reported in 2014 that Chen handled large amounts of off-the-books cash that flowed through the hands of undocumented workers at Chinese restaurants. Investigators found 18 mattresses on the floor of the basement, suggesting a possible connection to a human trafficking network.

Patnaude said a link to organized crime in the killings "has never been confirmed. It's certainly a theory." While the investigation is ongoing, he said "nothing solid" has come out.

"It's a very difficult case. There's cultural and language barriers, there's fear," Patnaude said. "It's a different community. ... They have a lot of undocumented workers working in the Chinese restaurants that were connected to that case and they feared law enforcement, so it's hard to get them to come forward."
