On the heels of the mistaken address shooting in Kansas City, this one occurred in a rural area of upstate New York, involved a car with multiple passengers, and with a fatal outcome.

A 20-year-old woman was shot and killed Saturday after she and three others accidentally turned into the wrong driveway while looking for a friend’s house in rural upstate New York, authorities said.

The young woman, identified as Kaylin Gillis, was struck by gunfire as a man fired two shots from his front porch, one of which hit the vehicle she was in, Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy said in a news conference Monday.

The man, 65-year-old Kevin Monahan, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with her death, Murphy said Monday. It is unclear whether Monahan has retained an attorney yet.

“It’s a very rural area with dirt roads. It’s easy to get lost. They drove up this driveway for a very short time, realized their mistake and were leaving, when Mr. Monahan came out and fired two shots,” Murphy said, adding that the area has poor cell phone service.

Presser from Washington County Sheriff's Office:

The woman, identified as Kaylin Gillis, was a passenger in a vehicle when a man fired two shots from his front porch, one of which hit the vehicle, Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy said in a news conference Monday. Gillis was struck by the gunfire and later died, the sheriff said.

The man, 65-year-old Kevin Monahan, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with her death, Murphy said Monday. It is unclear whether Monahan has retained an attorney yet.

Kaylin and her friends were looking for another friend's house. It was a very rural area, dirt roads, little or no cell phone coverage.

After she was shot, her friends had to drive 20 minutes to the closest town to get a cell phone signal to call for help.

Monahan was uncooperative with law enforcement and refused to leave his home. Local sheriff's deputies had to call for help from a special team with NY State Police to extract him from his home. He has expressed no remorse for killing Kaylin.

Chief Assistant District Attorney Christian Morris said Wednesday that Monahan is “confrontational and hot-tempered,” which would lend itself to impulsivity.

Morris also revealed Monahan had recently “caused a scene” at a state Department of Motor Vehicles office, alleging he was upset because he had to show up in person. Prosecutors asked the judge to impose bail between $250,000 cash and $1 million partly secured bond.

Monahan’s attorney, Kurt Mausert, accused prosecutors of spreading innuendo and said an alleged blowup at the DMV should not be factored into bail because “the whole state would get locked up.”

“Everybody in the state has a bad experience at the DMV — that’s ridiculous,” he said.

Hmmm, I've never got upset at the DMV. Schedule your visit, bring what you need, get there in time and be patient til its your turn.

Seriously! COVID is the best thing to ever happen to the NYS DMV. So many things can be done online and if you absolutely HAVE to go in, there are appointments now, so it isn't the cattle call it once was. Ironic that his wife works for NYS Dept of Labor and he causes a scene at the DMV.

About 10 years ago, I was sleeping on the couch at our cottage (it was summer and I was barely dressed as it was hot), which is on a short, private road on the waterfront of Lake Ontario. I heard a noise and woke up and saw the refrigerator door open and thought it was my husband getting a drink. It was not my husband. Some drunk college kid from a neighboring cottage had come in our cottage. I screamed something like "WTF are you doing in here?" and the kid was trying to figure out where he was and in the meantime, my husband woke up and came out. He went over to the kid,and put his hands on his shoulders and walked him to the door and told me to call the police. The kid was on our deck begging me not to call them, but I did, mainly to send the message that this is not ok. By the time the police showed up, when the sun came up, the kid was gone from the cottage next door - but it never happened again. I could see an instance like this as being a scenario where one could possibly be defensive and shoot someone who entered your actual home. Thankfully, a quick assessment was made that this kid was not trying to harm anyone and it all ended peacefully.

In the case of Kaylin Gillis, they never even got out of the car! This guy needs to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. It's not right.

This case is especially sad & disturbing. I.e., this young woman was with friends that pulled into the wrong drive-way - due to being lost. And, as they were pulling away from the house - the home-owner came out & shot at them, killing KG. Wow. At one point during this whole situation did the home-owner believe that he/his family were at risk of being harmed?! This kind of attitude makes 0 sense to me.

Someone lost their life for no reason at all. This perp. needs to be severely punished. Life in prison without parole is the least that should happen to this guy. Sickening.

One of his neighbors, who runs an auto repair shop in nearby Salem, said Monahan had become more and more upset in recent years at people making wrong turns into his driveway.

“I’m just a bit overwhelmed,” Matthews said in a phone interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday after speaking to other news outlets. “It is a tragic event.”

Murphy said Gillis and her friends got lost while going to another friend’s nearby house. They were driving two cars and a motorcycle when they turned into Monahan’s driveway. As they realized the mistake and turned around, Monahan fired two gunshots at them as they drove away, Murphy said.

I drove up to a house today to drop off some posters for a woman in my group. She said she lived in the white house with the green shutters.

A man answered my knock. He didn't have a gun. He didn't shoot me. He pointed to the house next door which also had green shutters and said my friend lived there.

Perhaps he should have installed a gate, with a padlock. Sure, it might be annoying to have people turning around in yr driveway, but shooting at them isn’t the answer.

My heart goes out to the victim's family and friends. I hope real justice will be served.

Why didn't he just put up a nice sign with his address at the front of his driveway so people would realize they were at the wrong address?

Alternatively just make peace with people entering the driveway, realizing the error, and leaving - Instead of feeling so angry about it.

There is no defense for this murder- none.
