NYC woman, 34, dies after she’s found in garbage chute of Staten Island apartment building
''A woman was declared dead after rescuers found her Friday in the garbage chute of a Staten Island apartment building.

Firefighters and police found the 34-year-old woman around 2:25 p.m. in a chute near the third floor of the Silver Lake Apartments on Victory Blvd., near the Silver Lake Golf Course.

One third-floor resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said a neighbor told him about the grisly find — so he went to check out the chute, about 20 feet from his door.

“I said, ‘Listen, you’ve got to call the cops on this one. This is a dead woman,’” he said. The woman, who he didn’t recognize, was fully clothed, and appeared to have trauma on her face, he said.''

"Fell down garbage chute..." ummm, I don't think so. From the ones I have seen -- very few -- I don't think it's possible for even a small adult to do -- even for fun. And who would want to do that -- Yuck!

Let's hope both victim and murderer both live in the building -- it might make it easier/quicker to solve.
Surely someone knew the woman -- was she or the murderer a resident or housekeeper or doorkeeper, superintendent, manager, bookkeeper, accountant etc. And she could have been visiting or having a visitor as you suggest, @LadyL.
And surely somebody saw or heard something...either that day/night or before (argument, unwanted attention, theft, etc.)... and could help LE in the investigation.

Feet first position is not what I would expect to find if someone accidentally fell down the chute. No victim blaming intended at all, but based on her casual garb (seen in photos from this article) I wonder if perhaps this occurred during/after any NYE revelry involving alcohol or other substances and if it could be a tragic misadventure.

Woman Dies After Getting Stuck In Garbage Chute On Staten Island

Firefighters rushed to free her from an opening that was only 18 inches by 18 inches.

The victim was later identified as Lisa Maria Hernandez, a resident of the building.

“We had specialized equipment on the floor below starting to open up the shaft, but units were able to get her out of the the opening when she was stuck in,” FDNY Deputy Chief Mark Egan said.''

N.Y. -- The 34-year-old woman found dead in a garbage chute on New Year’s Day in a Silver Lake apartment building has been identified by police as a resident of the rental complex, according to spokesman for the NYPD.

At about 2:24 p.m. on Friday, police responded to a 911 call of a female who was reported to be partially lodged in a garbage chute near the third-floor of 937 Victory Boulevard in Silver Lake, said police. The victim has been identified as Lisa Maria Hernandez, who lived on the fourth-floor of the apartment building, the NYPD spokesman said.

Upon arrival, EMS found Hernandez unconscious and unresponsive inside the location, according to police. EMS transported her to Richmond University Medical Center, West Brighton where she was pronounced dead, said the NYPD spokesman.

The NYPD spokesman said there were no “outward signs of trauma” visible on Hernandez’s body when she was found. Police said they are awaiting the Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death.

The NYPD spokesman said the circumstances surrounding Hernandez’s death are under investigation.

“I hope it gets solved real soon because I’m a little worried,” Vroom told CBS2’s Dave Carlin.

A tenant found Hernandez unconscious, lodged feet first, partway in the third-floor garbage chute.

“I don’t know how anybody could possibly fit there,” Vroom said. “When I take mom’s garbage out, you got to push it and take all the air out of the bags and everything.”

“We had specialized equipment on the floor below starting to open up the shaft, but units were able to get her out of the the opening when she was stuck in,” FDNY Deputy Chief Mark Egan said. “The opening on the third floor, they were able to pull her out.”

If investigators recovered anything definitive from security cameras or from witness statements, they are not saying.

Until the medical examiner determines cause of death, they will not even classify this case as a crime.

Hmm, if your assessment is correct, R&J (and I think it is), then the victim's barefootedness makes perfect sense to me--she was likely trying to escape her assailant and ran out of her apartment in such haste that she didn't dare stop even to put on her shoes.

Hmmm surprised for sure! After reading the article it seems that positional asphyxiation was the cause of death with alcohol and cocaine contributing factors. They said she lived on the fourth floor but she and her purse was found in the chute lodged in the third-floor?

The only scenario that possibly comes to mind is that she or someone else through her purse down the chute and in her attempt to get it she decided to go down one floor and see if she could get it out somehow.

However if it was foul play, the person would have had to put her in the chute alive...was that the struggle/argument?

Either way, nothing really seems to make sense!
