NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. -- A 33-year-old mother climbed over a safety rail and intentionally went over Niagara Falls with her two children, a 9-year-old and 5-month-old, according to New York state police, who said Wednesday that search and rescue efforts were unsuccessful.

Authorities responded to the park around 9 p.m. Monday and determined the family went over the rail on Luna Island, a small island between the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls that, along with the Horseshoe Falls, make up the popular tourist draw.

"The investigation has determined that this incident was intentional in nature, though the circumstances remain under investigation," state police said in a news release.

Authorities are using unmanned aircraft and underwater units in the investigation.

New York State Police and New York Park Police are working to recover the bodies of a mother and her two children who went over the American side of Niagara Falls on Monday night in an incident investigators are calling "intentional."

Police say they responded to an incident on Goat Island at about 9 p.m. According to investigators, 33-year-old Chianti Means, 9-year-old Roman Rossman and 5-month-old Mecca Means crossed over the safety guard rail and went over the falls on Luna Island.

Niagara Falls is huge and straddles the US/Canada Border.

There are always LE and National Park LE on site but it’s impossible to see what everyone is doing at any given time.

Unfortunately, suicides at the Falls are not uncommon.

It would appear so. If it were just one child, they hit have jumped/fallen and the mother tried to save them, but the little one couldn’t have thrown themselves in.

Why not just say that? It can be prefaced with a qualifier pending completion of the investigation.

Poor littles, what a horrific way to die. Again, she could have taken herself out-but left her children alive.
