NY - Parking garage collapses in Lower Manhattan, multiple injuries, 18 April 2023

Agreed !
Parking garages scare me, even without the threat of a collapse.
People whiz around inside of them, driving like they're at an amusement park ride.
We nearly collided with someone once.

I've thought about the recent railroad tragedies and if those rails are even being properly maintained by the owners ?
"Tragedy" as in while I don't know if there have been any deaths, innocent people have been basically thrown from their homes due to the chemical pollutants.
Imo.
Time and time again, history shows that when safety regulations are relaxed, companies do not maintain their products—railroad disasters are the latest in a long line of $$$ over people mentality.

Not since 2016 when refs were “loosened”.

Looking at the 1st and 2nd photos in the NYPost with all those cars crammed in, and together with the signs at street level that don't indicate valet parking, this must have been a full-service parking garage, i.e. where valet parking is assumed.
That's a lot of cars for a crumbling structure. MOO

Yeah, they really were crammed in there without much space in-between.

But here's the thing... why hasn't anyone given any thought to the weight of cars in parking garages, especially old, deteriorating garages? Every elevator I've ever been in for DECADES has the weight the car can handle, yet parking garages just cram them in not even considering their combined weight? Maybe because elevators don't cost anything to ride and the PG owners are making $$. The more cars, the more $$. It's all very sad and scary at the same time. :(

"Those vehicles have gas, other fluids that can cause hazards," said Commissioner of Emergency Management Zachary Iscol. In addition to that, we have the complexity of electric vehicles.
"We know that there are all sorts of issues with electric-vehicle batteries."

Beginning last year, parking garages in parts of Manhattan were required to undergo structural inspections and file reports with the city by the end of 2023, with additional inspections at least once every six years. City officials said the garage’s owners had yet to comply.

“There’s an investigation into exactly what happened here and making sure there’s something we could put in place to prevent something like this from happening,” Mayor Eric Adams said.

Theories abounded, and officials said they would consider all potential explanations — including the possibility that the structural integrity of older parking structures might be undermined by today’s heavier SUVs.

The mayor said that could be a matter worthy of investigation.

''NEW YORK (AP) — After the deadly collapse of a parking structure in lower Manhattan, New York City building officials swept through dozens of parking garages and ordered four of them to immediately shutter because of structural defects that “deteriorated to the point where they were now posing an immediate threat to public safety.”

Two of the parking garages have apartments above them — a 25-story high-rise in downtown Manhattan and an eight-story building in Chinatown — but officials said the residential areas appear to be in no danger.

City officials directed the owners of the parking facilities to make immediate repairs to corroded concrete and other damage.

Inspections were launched soon after a three-story stand-alone parking structure, about a century old, imploded into shards of concrete and twisted metal on April 18, crushing to death its manager.''

I wonder what kind of fixes they'll do? Patch the concrete (band-ade/cosmetic) or actually DO something about the issue? If the concrete is spalling then it needs more than patching IMO. That was one of Champlain's issues.

Concrete spalling typically begins when the steel reinforcing embedded within the concrete member rusts.

Here's more than I'm sure ya want to know. lol: Concrete Spalling | Robson Forensic.
