On May 30th, 1985, Mrs. Ruth Potdevin was at the Dorset Hotel at 30 West 54th Street waiting for the Packing Machinery Manufacturers Association lunch. Just before noon she told her husband that she was going to her room in the fifth floor. At 12.45 she had not returned. Her husband went to look for her and found her dead next to the bed. She had been killed by many blows with an axe or hatchet.
Related to Potdevin`s murder, five years earlier, an 85 years old woman named Janet Scott had been killed in a similar way. She was found in her room in the Bryant Hotel at 230 West 54th Street. She, too, had been killed by an axe or hatchet.
Police questioned many people but the only lead was that a few days after Potdevin`s murder a man and woman were seen using one of the victim's credit cards in a camera store in Times Square. The case is still unsolved.
