Carson, 31, was stabbed to death early Monday while waiting for the bus with his girlfriend, in what appeared to be a random, unprovoked attack.

Officials say Carson put himself between his stabber and his girlfriend before the fatal attack.

Friday would have been victim Ryan Carson's 32nd birthday. Funeral arrangements for Carson are still pending in Massachusetts.

On Monday, at about 4 a.m. Carson, 32, and his girlfriend were seen on surveillance video waiting at a bus stop on Malcolm X Boulevard in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn when a man approached them, police sources told CBS News. The assailant asked, “What are you looking at?” before stabbing Carson in the chest multiple times, CBS News reports, citing police sources.

On Monday night, more than 100 people gathered for a candlelight vigil to honor Carson's life, News 12 reported. Those in attendance said he and his girlfriend had left a wedding and were heading home before the stabbing, per the outlet.

The perp. should get the death penalty - what a scum-bag & a low-life piece of excrement. He attacked RC without provocation! Criminals like this make me sick. They should ship them all off to an island & let them fend for themselves. Perps. like this do not belong in civilized society.

New York state still has the death penalty but it hasn't been enforced for decades, since the NY Court of Appeals ruled it unconstitutional in relation to the state's constitution.

I think the most he can get is life without parole, and I would hope that such a savage, unprovoked attack would warrant LWP. I have seen two different reports in MSM - some are saying that BD (the suspect) has been charged with first degree murder, and some say that he has been charged with second degree murder.

It might make a difference in his sentencing.

What a complete waste of the life of a man who was trying to make a difference in the world. Gone at the hands of a raging murderer.
So the sister went over to the couple and apologized but apparently didn’t turn her murdering brother in?!!

Sounds like that is the case, the sister didn't turn him in as LE searched for him. Very sad. I wonder if she will be charged as well for not calling LE during the three-day search from Tuesday 4 a.m. to when he was arrested on Thursday.

Life without parole is the least that this perp. deserves for this heinous crime. However, I recently read that the perp. is charged with "murder depraved indifference". WTF does that even mean?! I agree this evil criminal should be charged with first-degree murder. This was unquestionably an unprovoked attack & murder in cold blood.

However, I suspect he will be released back into mainstream society at some point before he's that much older - and will just commit more crimes.

One of the many problems with the system is that violent offenders don't get the jail time they deserve - and then they're just let back out onto the street to commit more violent offenses. And, when one of these perps. is let out & then proceeds to kill/hurt/maim/rob someone else - everyone is justifiably up in arms & complains that the perp. should never have been let out in the first place. Typical.

Criminals are taking over the streets, and they have more rights than law-abiding citizens. Sickening.

The girlfriend of slain New York City activist Ryan Carson was unable to pick her boyfriend’s suspected killer from a photo lineup — and that could potentially hurt the case, according to legal experts.

Carson’s partner, who was with him the night he was fatally stabbed this month, was not able to pick suspect Brian Dowling, 18, from a photo array and instead picked a different person, Brooklyn prosecutors said during Dowling’s arraignment Thursday.

The girlfriend remains traumatized by the slaying and has trouble remembering basic details about the incident, a police official told ABC 7 Friday.

Two witnesses positively identified Dowling as Carson’s killer from a photo lineup and said he was the person seen stabbing the activist in a video of the senseless attack, prosecutors did note.
Girlfriend of Brooklyn activist had trouble picking out murder suspect in lineup, could hurt case: experts

On Thursday night, Dowling appeared in court after being charged with first-degree murder shortly after he was tearfully perp walked out of an NYPD precinct following his murder charge.

Several hours after his arrest, cops also seized a knife believed to have been used in the attack.

Dowling, still wearing the same white t-shirt that he was arrested in, looked somber and tilted his head into the air as the prosecution spoke at the hearing.

At one moment he glanced at his parents in the courtroom, who were tearful at the sight of their son in custody before he was ordered by Judge Joshua Glick to be held without bail.

His next court date is scheduled for October 11.

RSBM: What does this mean, more rights? I have heard others say it occasionally but am never quite sure what it means.

It apparently means "Second Degree" murder in New York. I would also like to see First Degree murder charges as well.

But....some states specify that needed elements for first degree murder must include pre meditation, "lying in wait" etc.. This can make first degree murder difficult to prove in impulse / rage type murders.

For example in my red state of Texas, Second Degree murder charges are very common. But.... the penalty for Second Degree murder is from 5-99 years in prison. So, a conviction can potentially be de facto LWOP.

Dowling's pre-arraignment hearing on Wednesday was packed out with dozens of relatives and friends, including Pastor Mitchell Still.

The pastor told DailyMail.com outside the courtroom
the teenager went through a 'traumatic event' shortly before the slaying, but would not reveal more.

Bbm.
Still no excuse for murdering someone in cold blood.

This perp should never be allowed to freely walk around in civilized society.
Other people have been through traumatic events and have not decided to kill anyone.
Omo.

Rest in peace, Ryan !
My condolences to his loved ones.
