There is great concern over the disappearance of a young mother in Suffolk County. Vinessa Hoera, 23, was last seen at work on Friday, and her burned-out car was found a day later. Adding to the mystery, a hospitalized co-worker's car was also torched.

A Guatemalan national held in the Riverhead jail in connection with the February disappearance of Vinessa Hoera allegedly confessed to her killing as well as disclosing her body’s location, sources said yesterday.
According to John Lombardi, an associate of the girl’s father, Mark Hoera, Faustino Chavez, 26, admitted yesterday in a conversation at the jail with the two men that he had killed the girl and disposed of her body in an undisclosed area of Southampton Town.

Guilty plea in killing
Man admits to murder of single mom and gives details of crime at hearing as grieving family listens

February 16, 2005
With his victim's family watching through tears in a Riverhead courtroom, Faustino Chavez described in new detail yesterday how he raped, suffocated and slashed the throat of Mastic Beach single mother Vinessa Hoera.

As part of an impromptu agreement, Chavez, 26, pleaded guilty to a charge of first-degree murder for killing Hoera, 23, a co-worker at a Westhampton seafood store.

In exchange, Acting State Supreme Court Judge Michael Mullen promised to sentence Chavez to 22 years to life in prison on March 15. If found guilty at a trial, Chavez could have been sentenced to life without parole. Pretrial hearings had been scheduled to begin yesterday.

"If I had my choice, the man would never see the light of day," said Hoera's mother, Donna Monti, of Flanders. "[But] if I had to go through a trial, I don't think I would have been able to handle it."

Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said today that 26-year-old Faustino Chavez will be sentenced tomorrow in Riverhead to 22 years to life in prison for the murder of Vinessa Hoera. The 23-year-old single mother vanished on the evening of February 27, 2004. Police found her body six weeks later, with fatal knife wounds to her neck, in low-lying brush near a Westhampton soccer field.
