Authorities arrested six people connected to unrest during an anti-Muslim protest outside the residence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani that prompted a bomb-squad response and a terrorism investigation.

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said two of the individuals arrested were accused of handling and igniting improvised explosives, which appeared to be jars wrapped in black tape with nuts, bolts and screws attached and fitted with hobby fuses. Mamdani is New York’s first Muslim mayor.

The NYPD Bomb Squad has conducted a preliminary analysis of a device that was ignited and deployed at a protest yesterday and has determined that it is not a hoax device or a smoke bomb. It is, in fact, an improvised explosive device that could have caused serious injury or death.Further analysis will be conducted, including on a second device.Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi were arrested on scene yesterday and are in custody in connection with this matter.

The NYPD is working on this investigation with our partners at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York and the FBI through our Joint Terrorism Task Force.I want to again thank the brave members of the NYPD who ran towards the danger without hesitation and quickly apprehended the suspects.

The NYPD announced that, as part of the ongoing investigation into the explosive device deployed yesterday, authorities have located a second suspicious device inside a vehicle on East End Avenue between 81st and 82nd Streets. Officers have secured the surrounding area and are carrying out limited evacuations of nearby buildings while the NYPD Bomb Squad works to assess and safely remove the device. They were inspired by ISIS and hoped to do something worse than the Boston Marathon bombing because "only 3" people died in that incident.

I agree that it's wrong no matter the target.

I do think it's important to state who the target was because this was reported as being a protest outside the mayor's house and the protestors were part of some right-wing guy's group. They were not intending to harm the mayor, and it was not the group there for the protest that brought explosives trying to kill people. This is the reason I think mentioning it is important. We can disagree with the protestors, we can agree with them, but they did not bring explosives to kill people, 2 people separate from the protestors decided to kill people and one of their devices landed on the mayor's porch. Initial reporting made it seem as if those there to protest tried to harm the mayor. I don't even think these idiot terrorists wanted to harm the mayor, thankfully, they had no success with killing anyone. IMO

I hate that kids are being radicalized to the point that they are throwing their lives away to a cause they barely understand. These acts of violence and extremism has to stop. Also, the blatant disrespect people have for other people, having a pig roast during Ramadan crosses a major line, freedom of religion and free speech aren't free someone always pays a price. These values are part of the fabric of our country. just my opinion.

Do you think it was also true for those who were young in the 1960s and 1970s protests against the war in Vietnam, both in the US, and in Europe. no i think they understand their ideology, I just don't think they realize the severity of the effect of their actions. The sentences are no joke and I have listened to a lot of interviews with young people who have been repatriated and have come back from those situations saying they didn't realize how bad the consequences are.. and i've been studying this topic for years..i have read a ton of books and most of them 1st hand accounts. Just my opinion..and this doesn't apply to everyone, i can't know what people believe in or how they choose to support their causes.
