Arrest made, presser at 2:30 this afternoon.
Police have made an arrest in the slaying of Philadelphia Police officer Richard Mendez, several days after the officer was shot to death in a parking lot at Philadelphia International Airport, according to officials.

[...]

Officer [Richard] Mendez, 50, was shot and killed in a shooting that took place on Thursday night, at about 11 p.m. just as he -- and fellow officer Raúl Ortíz -- arrived at a parking lot for terminals D and E at the Philadelphia International Airport to begin their shifts.

As they exited they were walking through the lot to head into work when they heard the sound breaking glass, according to investigators. Officials said they then spotted a group of people breaking into a vehicle inside the parking garage.

When the officers confronted the group, gunfire erupted. Mendez, a 22-year veteran of the police department, was shot multiple times in the upper torso while Ortíz was shot in the arm.

Mendez was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Ortíz was released from the hospital on Saturday.

During a press conference, Interim Philadelphia Police Commissioner John Stanford said two New Jersey men -- Alexander Batista-Polanco, 21, of Camden, and Hendrick Peña-Fernández, 21, of Pennsauken -- have been arrested and will be charged in Mendez's slaying.

"I'm glad we are able to bring some sense of closure to the Mendez family," said Stanford.

Batista-Polanco had open warrants in New Jersey and Scranton said Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore.

Early Tuesday morning, U.S. Marshals took Batista-Polanco into custody in New Jersey and brought him in for processing.

At some point between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, Batista-Polanco was then taken to Scranton where he faced unrelated burglary charges.

PHILADELPHIA - A former Philadelphia police officer believes the lack of cameras around Philadelphia International Airport has made it one of the most unsafe airports in the country.

Joseph McAlister said he worked as an airport officer for four years and learned about its most vulnerable places for crime, including all of the airport garages.

The airport parking garage near Terminal D is where Philadelphia police officer Richard Mendez and Officer Raul Ortiz were shot during a suspected car theft last week.

Mendez leaves behind a wife and a daughter, [who] spoke at her father’s funeral, saying he was a proud Philly cop and much more: “a full-time husband, dad, son, brother, friend. And he always found a way to make time for us. He was truly my superhero.”

[She] said her father was days away from retirement.

“My daddy was on track to retire on Oct. 15. It would have been his 23rd year on the force,” she said.

“When he retired, he wanted to go back to school, but this time to teach. I could not think of a better and more qualified teacher than him.”

Att three arraigned yesterday, now awaiting trial.
Yobranny Martinez-Fernandez, 18, of Camden, will face charges of murder and related offenses for Mendez’s killing and attempted murder charges for the wounding of Ortiz, Municipal Court Judge David Shuter ruled after the hearing.

Alexander Batista-Polanco, 21, of Camden, and Hendrick Peña-Fernandez, 21, of Pennsauken, will face charges of second-degree murder of a law enforcement officer and related offenses for Mendez’s killing. The attempted-murder charge for shooting Ortiz was dropped for both men.

A robbery charge for all three men was also dropped.

The case moves to trial proceedings.
