CLEVELAND, Ohio – An Akron man is accused of forcing a 12-year-old boy to take long ice baths and do push-ups in the hours before the child died Saturday, court records show.

Anthony McCants, 23, was charged Saturday in Akron Municipal Court in the death of Jadako Taylor, 12, of Akron. McCants was charged with endangering children.

McCants forced the boy to take two ice baths, or cold plunges, between 5 a.m. and 2 p.m., according to the complaint. The first ice bath lasted 45 minutes with short breaks for pushups and other physical activities, the filing shows.

The second ice bath lasted 30 minutes, according to the court document. When Jadako died, his body temperature was 74 degrees Fahrenheit, the complaint shows. Hypothermia sets in when a person’s body temperature drops under 95 degrees.

The 12-year-old was unresponsive when authorities arrived.

It was not clear what McCants’ relationship to Taylor was, but a caller who dialed police when the child started having the medical emergency claimed it was his little brother, the Akron Beacon Journal reported.

wishing Mr. McCants everything he deserves and more.

Poor boy, he must have been in so much pain. Even adults can struggle with more than a few minutes in an ice bath. The push-ups too....agree it's torture not punishment.
I used to take ice showers and it's definitely something you have to ease yourself into and mentally/physically prepare for.

Some of the news articles on this case are tagged as "graphic" and it's absolutely true. The details of what this kid went through are unsettling.

Easing in to is one thing, but no one should ever do more than 10 minutes. A child likely shouldn't do more than 5 minutes. Forcing him to do 45 minutes and later another 30 minutes is torture.
