An Ohio woman allegedly admitted to drowning her elderly grandmother to avoid nursing home bills.

Heidi Matheny, 35, was arrested for the murder of her 93-year-old grandmother, Alice Matheny.

The granddaughter allegedly admitted she took her grandmother to a doctor’s appointment, where a doctor told them the elderly woman needed to be in a nursing home, something they could not afford and insurance would not cover, according to the Eaton, Ohio, police report.

Heidi said they left the appointment and enjoyed ice cream together.

Back at the house, Heidi allegedly described to officers how she walked up behind her grandmother while the 93-year-old woman was doing dishes and pushed her head into the sink, holding her there "until the bubbles stopped," according to the police report cited by WDTN.

“According to the confession, she was just tired of taking care of a grandmother,” [snip] “It’s nothing that she did,” Heidi Matheny said in the police interview, according to WDTN” She’s not – She’s the perfect freaking grandma.”

Her grandmother's assets - unless held in a trust or other protective segregation - would likely have had to be sold to pay for nursing home care. The only insurance that pays for such care is LTC (longterm care insurance). Medicaid takes over when assets are exhausted.

I wish writers of these stories would do a little research instead of parroting misinformation.

Whatever her motive, this confessed killer needs to pay dearly for her horrific crime against a very vulnerable person.

This makes me very sad. Elder abuse is so horrific. I hope this criminal will get the severe punishment she deserves.

The grandmother could have had a 3 day qualifying stay in an acute care setting, then went to a skilled bed under Medicare, in a local nursing facility. After that, she could have likely qualified for her state's Medicaid long term care. A little research by the granddaughter could have prevented this murder. So sad. I love my elderly patients!

Right? My guess is this will end up being a case of guilty by reason of insanity. MOO

Afterward, she walked from the apartment to the sheriff’s office. Police asked her what led up to the drowning and she said “nothing special, it was a day like any other day”, according to a police report.

I'm shocked. I expected Heidi to be deemed incompetent to stand trial based on her admitting she drowned her grandmother and the statement she made saying Ms. Alice is "the perfect freaking grandma". How does a sane person do that? This woman is cold-hearted. If that day was "a day like any other day", I cringe thinking about what kind of long-term abuse Ms. Alice might have endured prior to her death. MOO
