A Baltimore, Ohio man charged for murder in a bizarre case last week has a long criminal record in Fairfield County and elsewhere, resulting from a lifelong pattern of addiction, diagnosed mental illness and grief.

Raymond Leiendecker, 45, is accused of ramming his pickup truck through the Diley Ridge Medical Center's emergency room last Friday, killing a 61-year-old hospital employee and injuring another.

Leiendecker appeared before a judge on Monday and was issued a $5 million bond in the case. He spoke very little and could be seen yawning and shrugging during the video-linked court appearance from the Fairfield County Jail.

The Fairfield Sheriff's Office says the suspect, 45-year-old Raymond Leindecker, came to the hospital earlier this morning to get a voluntary mental evaluation and left against doctor's orders. Authorities said Leindecker hopped in his truck and drove it into the emergency room, authorities said.

“I heard this boom and then I looked over and saw this black truck just barreling right into the information desk," said Boch, “there was a lady that was pinned between the truck and the desk.”

“There was no sign of the vehicle breaking. That coupled with the statements that he made lead us to believe it was intentional. What did he say? I’m not going to say in his taped statements," said Fairfield Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Alex Lape.

After two court-appointed mental evaluations concluded he was competent to assist in his own defense, the murder trial of a Baltimore man is set to continue.

Raymond G. Leiendecker, 46, is facing multiple charges after he allegedly drove his truck into the Diley Ridge Medical Center on Sept. 13, 2019. One man died at the scene, and another victim died almost a week later from injuries they received.

Leiendecker was first charged with one count aggravated murder, an unspecified felony; one count of murder, an unspecified felony; and one count vandalism, a third-degree felony in October 2019. A superseding indictment filed in December 2019 added another count each of aggravated murder and murder.

During a competency hearing Tuesday, Fairfield County Common Pleas Judge David Trimmer said the court had paid for and received a second psychiatric evaluation. According to court documents, the defendant found inconsistencies with the first psychiatric evaluation, and requested a second evaluation.

Prosecutor Kyle Witt said it had been stipulated in previous hearings that the findings in the first competency evaluation that Leiendecker was competent to stand trial and assist in his own defense. Witt said the second evaluation came to the same conclusion.

"In a case like this, I'd like to select what you may all consider what you may all consider a reliable trial date. Due to no one's fault, this competency matter was important to resolve, but the case is old. It's actually been almost a year since the competency matter was filed," Witt said. "Again, I think (COVID-19), I don't like to keep tossing that out as a reason or basis, but Dr. Smith needed Mr. Leiendecker be transported to a psychiatric hospital as part her evaluation. That took some time, and it took some time for her to complete that."

Trimmer said the status hearing would be scheduled for Feb. 9, with the intent to gear up for a jury trial. @Niner
