The baby's mother was in the room with her child and two other relatives (a 3-year-old and another 1-year-old) and facing away from the children when she heard a single gunshot, Cleveland Police said Monday.

The mother saw the baby on the floor bleeding, and a handgun was ground near where the 3-year-old relative had been standing, police said.

“Currently we’re investigating where this firearm came from. We’re also investigating how this tragedy actually happened.”

He promised that those responsible would be held accountable.

Cleveland parents plead guilty in death of 1-year-old shot by playmate - September 2016

The parents of a 1-year-old boy accidentally shot dead in Cleveland two years ago pleaded guilty Wednesday to involuntary manslaughter.

The couple was set to stand trial this week on reckless homicide, involuntary manslaughter and multiple counts of endangering children. Under the deal reached Wednesday, the reckless homicide charges and all but one endangering children charge will be dropped.

Braylon Robinson was fatally shot in the head when another 3-year-old boy he was playing with found a gun that police say Sims hid underneath a living room sofa.

Father sentenced in the shooting death of 1-year-old son - October 2016

Ricardo Sims, who left two loaded handguns within the reach of children, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for the accidental shooting death of his 1-year-old son.

Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Nancy R. McDonnell sentenced Robinson to three years of community control sanctions. Sims received 18 months for the Involuntary Manslaughter and Endangering Children counts, plus an additional, mandatory 12 months for the firearm specification attached to the manslaughter charge.

“This was a preventable tragedy,” said Judge McDonnell. “You lost your child and it is very difficult to hear all of this and know the outcome.”
