Daniel Mazilu
Mazilu left his home in Silver Lake, Ohio at 2:30 p.m. on March 28, 2002. He lived with his parents and brother on Graham Road. After departing his residence, he went to the Spicertown area of Akron, Ohio and made a purchase. He has never been heard from again.
Two days later, Mazilu's brother reported him missing. He didn't have a credit card, a bank account or any cash at the time of his disappearance; he was between jobs and his parents supported him while he studied at the University of Akron.
In early April 2002, Mazilu's white Plymouth Duster with white aluminum rims and the Ohio license plate number COT 3588 was found unlocked, undamaged and abandoned on a runaway truck ramp on a major highway at the West Virginia/Maryland border. His student parking pass was inside the vehicle and the license plate had been removed.
Mazilu had never been to West Virginia before and hadn't mentioned wanting to go there. Authorities believe whoever parked the car did so deliberately in hopes that it wouldn't be found quickly.
According to his family, Mazilu was very close to his mother, had no problems in his life and hadn't given any indication that he planned to leave home. He has diverse hobbies, including physical fitness and racing carrier pigeons. Although he was raised in the Eastern Orthodox Church, he had become interested in Judaism prior to his disappearance.
There's been no trace of him since 2002, and the circumstances of his disappearance are unclear. His case remains unsolved.

Silver Lake Police Sgt. Dann M. Nivens went into retirement with an unsolved mystery on his mind: The 2002 disappearance of villager Daniel Mazilu.
“They say every police officer has one case that gets under his skin and Daniel Mazilu is mine,” Nivens says.
Nivens, who retired Feb. 22 after 25 years with the department, says the case still weighs on him, and he intends to pursue answers in retirement.
The motive for the disappearance of Mazilu remains a mystery, he says. He worked the case as a detective from the time the 23-year-old Romanian national vanished on March 29, 2002.
More than a decade later, the village police department continues to consider Mazilu’s disappearance a missing person case because it has unearthed no evidence a crime has occurred. And despite the assistance of state, federal and international agencies, Nivens says Mazilu’s fate is unknown.
“The case isn’t closed,” Nivens says, but he acknowledges its cold trail is frustrating for someone who became a police officer in order to solve crimes.
Nivens decided to become a police officer when he was 11 years old and met then-Cuyahoga Falls cop Lou Dirker. “I met him when he was working an extra job, directing traffic at the opening of a bakery on Oakwood Drive,” Nivens recalls. Their acquaintance was renewed when Dirker addressed a Cub Scout meeting that Nivens attended.
“I remember this guy standing there with highly polished boots and an immaculately pressed uniform,” Nivens said, “and I thought, ‘I want to be just like him.’”
Dirker is the chief of the Stow Police Department today.
Nivens began his career in the law enforcement field in 1975 as one of the founding members of the Police Explorers in Cuyahoga Falls. When he served in the Marine Corps, he started a Police Explorers post where he was stationed in Jacksonville, N.C. When he left the service, Nivens became a reserve officer in Stow, a position he held from 1983 -1988. He joined the village police department in 1988 and says he enjoyed it so much that serving Silver Lake became his career.
“It’s been a great 25 years,” Nivens said. “But if you would’ve told me in 1988 that we would have video cameras, computers and cell phones in our cars and be wearing body armor, I’d have said you’re crazy.”
Nivens was a graduate of the 51st session of the Police Executive Leadership College and was one of the founding members of the Summit Metro Crash Response Team. He teaches at the University of Akron, Munroe Falls and Stark State police academies as well as the Akron Police Department.
“I do that because I want to be able to contribute to kids coming into law enforcement,” Nivens says. “Being a mentor is a reward in itself.”
Village Mayor Bernie Hovey praises Nivens’ “vast knowledge” and says he used his experience to groom and mentor newer and younger members of the police department.
“Dann was always kind, friendly and likable, as well as focused, determined and committed to being the best policeman that he could be,” Hovey says. “He possessed an outgoing personality, one which he used to his advantage when doing his job.”
Silver Lake Police Chief John Conley agrees Nivens is going to be missed. ”‘Danno’ was the guy I could give a task to and he always took it that 10 percent more. While somebody will take his place, he is irreplaceable. Well respected in the community and among his peers.”
“I was proud to serve the village and be a police officer,” Nivens says. “And I hope I inspired the next generation to be as proud wearing that uniform.”
“To be someone’s mentor is the highest form of praise,” he adds.
