Elizabeth Griffith's missing case came to the media attention today when police in Ashland county gave a press conference indicating they had rescued a "missing" woman held against her will in a house in Ashland. Police at the scene of the abduction rescue also found 2 dead bodies and arrested a man for kidnapping. The missing woman turned out to NOT be Elizabeth. Griffith is missing from the city of Ashland and was last seen Aug. 16 in the area of Aldi and Walmart. Police believe she may have been in Ontario within the last few days.

Edna Boals, a friend of Elizabeth Griffith, said she had had negative interactions with the man who lived in the Covert Court house, as the man was always yelling at Boals to get away from his property when she was walking in the area to do laundry at the nearby laundromat.

Friends of Elizabeth gathered with friends and family of another missing woman Stacy Stanley, waiting to hear answers:

Stacey 's son Kurtis and others canvassed downtown Ashland with missing persons flyers.

One is still prominently displayed at the laundromat right across from 365 Covert Court where friends of another missing woman named Elizabeth and those who knew Stacy are gathering, hoping their worst fears aren't confirmed when the two bodies found inside are identified.

"New information" in Elizabeth's case:

Now, investigators are keeping the missing person's case of Elizabeth Griffith sealed based on what they call new information.

Griffith was last seen at the Walmart last month.

The second victim in the home has yet to be identified and the Cuyahoga County coroner assists with the autopsies.

Prosecutor Chris Tunnell confirmed the second body from the Covert Court house is that of missing Ashland woman Elizabeth GriffithGriffith, 29, had been reported missing since she hadn't been seen since Aug. 16 near Walmart.

The second body has been identified as missing woman Elizabeth Griffith.

Her friend, Edna Louise Boals, worried it was going to be Griffith. Griffith has not been seen since Aug. 16, when she was captured on surveillance cameras at a local Aldis.
"We all love her," she said.
Shawn Grate, arrested and charged in the case, later led police to a third body in Mansfield.
Boals claims that Griffith dated Grate at one time.

ASHLAND - Elizabeth Griffith was outgoing, friendly and spent much of her time at her church and the Kroc Center, said the people who knew her Friday night.

A funeral service was held at Grace Brethren Church on West Main Street. A balloon launch followed the service by members of the Ashland community.

"She used to come up and visit the ladies who lived in the Essex House, and one lady had her hip broken a couple years ago and Elizabeth wanted to come up and take care of her until she got better," Thompson said.

"She (Elizabeth) was happy, always singing, always friendly," said Thompson. "She walked everywhere. She had a payee because if I said to her, I need $150, she'd say OK," she said, adding Elizabeth was developmentally disabled.

Accused Ashland serial killer's case headed for trial on April 9

Ashland County Common Pleas judge Ron Forsthoefel said the Shawn Grate case is "ramping up for trial" -- which is slated for April 9.

In what was expected to be the final pretrial in the case against the suspected serial killer, the defense and prosecution met with the judge via Skype video-conference Monday. Grate watched silently from the Ashland County Jail.

Grate, 41, is charged with four counts of aggravated murder in connection with the deaths of Stacey Stanley and Elizabeth Griffith. If convicted, Grate could receive the death penalty.

Trial of accused serial killer Shawn Grate

Shawn Grate also videotaped himself raping one of the women found dead and the woman rescued by police a year and a half ago, Ashland County Prosecutor Chris Tunnell said during opening statements.

Grate has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder and could be sentenced to death if convicted of killing 29-year-old Elizabeth Griffith and 43-year-old Stacey Stanley.

Jury finds Shawn Grate guilty on all counts of aggravated murder and kidnapping

ASHLAND, Ohio - A jury has found Shawn Grate guilty on all counts of aggravated murder and kidnapping.

Grate's sentencing phase will begin Friday, May 18. The same jury that convicted Grate will also decide if he should receive the death penalty.

The jury that convicted a man for killing two Ohio women has recommended to an Ashland County judge that he be put to death.

Shawn Grate, 41, was found guilty for the 2016 rapes and strangulation deaths of Elizabeth Griffith, 29, and Stacey Stanley, 43. Grate also was also found guilty on a kidnapping charge for abducting a third woman who escaped from the Ashland home where the bodies of the two women were found.

Jury: Shawn Grate deserves to die

ASHLAND - An Ashland County jury has recommended suspected serial killer Shawn Grate deserves to die.

The six-man, six-woman jury got the case just before 5 p.m. Friday after almost a full day of the penalty phase. They returned to the courtroom shortly after 7:45 p.m., deliberating for less than an hour and a half.

Prosecutors argued the aggravated circumstances in the aggravated murders of Elizabeth Griffith and Stacey Stanley outweighed the mitigating factors that would have spared Grate's life.

Ashland County Common Pleas Judge Ron Forsthoefel will make the ultimate decision at sentencing, which he scheduled for 10 a.m. June 1.

Prosecutor Bambi Couch Page previously said Grate confessed to killing Cunningham in June at the vacant Madison Township house, which was destroyed by a suspicious fire on June 20 or 21.

Cunningham's body was recovered at the rear of the house in a wooded area, down a ravine.

In the Ashland case, the bodies of Stacey Stanley, 43, and Elizabeth Griffith, 29, were recovered in an abandoned house at 363 Covert Court near the downtown.
