Email from Shaker Heights man prompts father to call 911, leading to murder-suicide investigation

This article talks about the email. Apparently the man who murdered his wife and children (John Tobin), had recently lost his job, which must have been worrying as both kids attended private schools that probably cost a pretty penny. There is no indication that his wife was employed outside the home, either. On top of that stress, the family’s pet dog had recently died. I certainly don’t mean to imply there is any justification for this crime, of course!

Oh my gosh, this is terrible:
“Philip Tobin told a police dispatcher he had been at church that morning and didn’t see the email, which “might be sort of dangerous,” until he got home.

“He’s lost his job, his wife is recovering with cancer and just last week his dog died. They were inseparable,” he told the dispatcher, later explaining that the dog broke its back when it tried to jump a culvert at a local park.

“I know he’s quite depressed,” Philip Tobin told the dispatcher, adding that he didn’t think his son was being treated.”

Still does not justify murdering three innocent family members, though.

Losing your job and dog certainly will make most people sad and upset, but it won't trigger mental illness and/or homicidal behavior! No excuse for this man, sorry.

I wonder why he was let go from his cushy job. Maybe whatever he did to lose his job was a symptom of an ongoing problem that culminated in the murder of his family. Just horrible, horrible!!! I cannot stand reading about murder-suicides especially when children are involved! It's just heartbreaking and infuriating!

Stress can cause rage that bubbles up out of nowhere. It's the reason for most violence IMO. However, in this case, he had time to compose an email which means he had time to think about it and plan it which, in my opinion, means he had time to research and choose different options. I don't understand how some people think murder is the answer but they do.
