This was my first time making a public records request, and I figured I would start with a cold case from the very town I live in. The police sent me a copy of their initial incident report and said they can't give me any more information as the case is still open.
Jason C. Marti, 21 years-old at the time, was found dead in a field near the Buehler's grocery store on Burbank Road in Wooster, Ohio on October 24, 1996. He was found by a construction worker at around 8:00 AM. The incident report states that the police believed he had died by a gunshot wound to the chest between 4:20 PM the afternoon prior and at around the time they were dispatched to the scene the next morning. The report classified the death as a homicide.
You can find a couple news articles from the Wooster Daily Record by a quick Google search, but they are all behind a paywall. The case was also mentioned in a book by Jack Swint entitled, "Who Killed...? Cleveland, Ohio" and on the "Ohio Mysteries" podcast. There is way too little information for me to speculate, but I do think it's worth noting that I found via public records on the Ohio Department of Commerce website that the Buehler's (Milltown location) had a liquor license at the time of the murder [1]. Maybe that doesn't mean anything, though a significant percentage of homicides involve alcohol consumption by the offender [2].
The case is still active. If you have any relevant tips, you can call the Wooster Police Department Tipline at (330) 287-7755.
