Two newborn twins were found dead and placed in a garbage can on Cleveland's Eastside on Saturday.

Sgt. Jennifer Ciaccia said the Cleveland Homicide Police Unit tells PEOPLE in a statement that a 16-year-old female, who police believe gave birth to the infants days earlier, was located and was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

"Investigators will present the facts of this case to the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Prosecutor's Office," Ciaccia's statement says.

According to Ciaccia, the two children were found near the 2800 block of Ludlow Road in Cleveland's Buckeye Shaker Square on Saturday night.

"I've heard that the discovery was made by a landscaper that came over to do the grass," an unidentified neighbor told WOIO, adding he heard the landscaper found the children while dumping grass clippings in the trash bin.

WKYC reported the children were born on Thursday. Neighbors told the outlet they heard the babies crying late at night but did not think anything of it, other than they thought the infants were waiting to be fed.

"Now that I know why the police are here, it hurts," one neighbor told WKYC.

Did the 16-year-old alleged "mother" of the babies hide her pregnancy somehow? Was she home alone when she gave birth? Really did nobody in her life notice anything?

Ohio Dept of Health is quoted in the article about Ohio's "Safe Haven" program for parents of children they can't take care of. The problem is ODH offers very little information about the program. Its very likely most young women who need this assistance aren't aware its available.

Poor babies. I don't think I could have tolerated listening to them cry for days without calling 911, but that's just me.

A 16-year-old mother is due in court Tuesday to face charges in connection with the death of her newborn twins.

The teen is now charged in Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court with a total of nine criminal counts. According to court documents, the girl is facing charges of murder, gross abuse of a corpse, endangering children and tampering with evidence.

Cleveland police told the FOX 8 I-Team the bodies of the infants were found around 7:20 p.m. on Saturday inside a trash can along Ludlow Road.

The babies were born a few days before their bodies were discovered. Police said the girl’s mother did not know her daughter was pregnant.

30 weeks for twins, they were possibly viable. Surprising they tried to go initially for murder. These kids get info at school, don't they? They know they can drop babies off at a fire station. WHY does this keep happening. And parents didn't know.. c',mon. SOMETHING changed in this girls appearance.

yes, and TWINS. Two babies and no one knew anything? It's possible but not very probable IMO

The safe baby drop off program (not sure what it's called in Ohio) is such a wonderful thing. The baby/babies will be getting good care, and the mother would remain anonymous. It's a great help all-around. So glad and thankful that it is available at several different places in most towns/cities, etc. As long as the baby hasn't been abused, etc., things should be okay for mother and baby.

I do wonder sometimes if some mothers (especially young women or teens, etc.) who need to use this program either cannot get to one, or don't know where one is, scared to do it, or are unaware of it. No problems as long as the infant is not abused or harmed. At 14-, 15-, 16-years-old, I would be a bit distrustful and possibly frightened -- and some mothers have no way of getting there and/or are perhaps afraid to ask someone for help.
This is not meant to give an excuse, etc., to the person in this case, please know.
This is just such a great sadness all the way around -- and it's not the first one we've seen here on WS, and it won't be the last.

At a time where nearly all information is available literally at your fingertips- just a few clicks away on a smartphone, it's both shocking and disturbing how many babies wind up in the trash. I'm not sure this is a "lack of available info" problem though.... Those who choose adoption are somehow able to seek that information out; those who choose abortion are able to look up the laws in various states, and seek those places out. If women and young women/teens can somehow manage the means to travel sometimes great distances for those alternatives, going somewhere other than a garbage can or a ditch on the side of the road isn't an impossible feat or a huge ask. IMO.

OMG! No! At 16 you shouldn’t have to feel this way.

But also those poor babies! At least they’ve got each other up in heaven. I don’t know why anyone would harm a little baby. But even if they were unharmed still safe haven please! This is why I support the safe haven law.
