GUILTY OH - Noella Ravas, 62, stabbed to death, Hinckley, 29 Nov 2007

OMG I can't believe you're saying that... I was about to post the exact same thing in a different thread. Well, you took the words right out of my mouth.

JanetElaine,
In a way I can't believe I even said that but I am sick and saddened by the amount of violent crimes we read about every day.

I don't see how he deserves a firing squad if he's truly mentally ill. Obviously there was enough documentation provided to the gov't so that he rec'd a monthly disability payment. Anyone that has gone through that knows it's like pulling teeth to get that kind of help.

Now, the 16 yr old kid that killed his mom because he couldn't play his video games? Maybe.

Thank you

The murderer sure has empty dead looking eyes. Something's very wrong with him. I wonder what his mother supposedly lied to him all his life about since he stated that's why he killed her, that she deserved it. I hope he's charged with something severe because he knew what he was doing and able to follow directions from the police. Even had the chance to change his mind and stabbed again. He was probably just trying to get her to fork over all his or her social security check since it's almost the first of the month and he was probably all out of money.

I agree wtih you and I am TIRED of hearing excuses for these murderous selfish SOB's...

I'm telling you the US needs to use firing squads.
Maybe some of these murderers would think twice before harming others.
This creep killed him mom....right before Christmas.

This is such a sad story, as until the end, the mother still loved her son.. The mother evidently had gone through some kind of training (as she was able to keep calm on the phone with 911.etc) on trying to deescalate the situation (her son being mentally ill) and it is very sad that this tragedy even happened.

If he was mentally ill, he didn't think ONCE, much less twice.

He is mentally ill. The way she was saying she trusted him loved him; the words she was using and keeping her calm was to try to defuse him. She had to have learned it somewhere in the mental health community. It's just a very sad case, if her son does get stabilized on medication he will have to deal with what he did. I honestly think he's severely mentally ill. He could have been delusional at the time.

This man should have been hospitalized. It wouldn't surprise me if his mental illness caused him to murder his mother. How very sad: :(
I think you are right, very sad situation.

It is very hard to keep some mentally ill in hospitals without their consent. I know many who go in and out like a revolving door - terribly sad because I don't know if that can actually help their circumstances.

Before my daughter got on medication, she would say and do things that she was horrified at herself for not being able to control. This mother had a great deal of agony over loving her son for a long time, and I'm willing to bet when he is stablized, he will end up killing himself over this.

Mental Illness is just a messed up animal.

That's so true. He wasn't a minor either, so she might not have had any control over him.

I pray mental illness never touches you, your children, your family.

Unfortunately, there is a huge difference between a reason and an excuse. I know none of us here are making excuses for his behavior - there is no excuse for it. There is a reason, however, and it would have been great if there would have been a preventative action taken before hand. Certainly this wasn't out of the blue "he was always such a good boy" thing.

Yikes! That is the next town from me! Right up the road. Scary when it hits that close to home!

Angie, I haven't been to Hinckley lately so I'm wondering if it's still the sprawling rural town that I remember. I was trying to understand the slow emergency responder time. Maybe their home wasn't that close to the station?

I am sorry if I offended you. That was never my intention to offend anyone. I am just heart broken for the victim here and I don't want to see the ''killer'' being viewed as the victim because he had some type of mental issue. Obviously if you murder someone you have a mental issue regardless... As for praying mental illnesses never touching my life.. I could write a book.

My heart breaks for all victims, those with mental illness included. Like those born with Mental retardation or Epilepsy or a Heart murmur, we are born sick, we did not ask to be this way.

This is not to say that I believe the "killer" should remain in society or go unpunished because I don't. But a firing squad?! come on! This mans own mother, his own "victim" knew he was ill, knew he didn't mean what he was doing and still loved him.

How about society starts demanding better care for the mentally ill, better laws, forced medication, something?! When things like this happen everyone gets in a big uproar screaming about those of us with mental illness but not suggesting a damned thing to change anything!

This isn't going to just go away, people- WE aren't going to go away! Things are only going to get worse if society keeps ignoring us. WE could be your children, your spouse, your neighbor, your friend, or even you. What would you do then?!

I love you I listen to your words. You are an advocate of the first order. I understand and I bless you every step of the way. This is one step you will have to tread by yourself. I will follow. No one has given the insight you have and no one will be that forthcoming.
