GUILTY OH - Robert McKernan, 29, shot to death, Massillon, 31 Dec 2014

Colleen McKernan, 26, is accused of murdering her husband Robert McKernan, 29, New Years Eve. Multiple shots were fired to his face & Torso. She reportedly told the 911 dispatcher that he had "put his hands on me for the last time." She admitted that she was drunk & then was allegedly doing CPR on her husband. The couple were just married in April of 2014.

On Friday 01/02/2015 bond was reduced to $100,000, Judge Elum & she was released.


This will definitely be a case I will be attending.

I have so many questions in this case.

When checking records on StarkCJIS (online case docket) it is interesting to note that the same Judge, who reduced bond, also handled the previous cases against Robert McKernan

Colleen McKernan entered a plea of not guilty today.

On the 911 tape she admitted to being drunk, stated he hit her & she was doing CPR on him. When Police arrived they found multiple gunshot wounds on him.

The August trial for a former Massillon woman charged in the New Year’s Eve death of her husband has been moved to September.

Colleen M. McKernan, 27, of Perry Township, will have a pre-trial hearing Aug. 26 in Stark County Common Pleas Court.

The trial — originally set for Aug. 31 — has been moved to Sept. 28 in front of Judge Chryssa Hartnett, according to Jeff Foltz, Hartnett’s bailiff.

Two more pretrial hearings have been scheduled before the trial is set to begin in January for the former Massillon woman accused of killing her husband.
Colleen M. McKernan, 27, of Perry Township, is charged with murder with a firearm specification in the death of 29-year-old Rob McKernan Dec. 31 in the couple’s Massillon home. She told an emergency dispatcher that she was drunk, and that her husband had hit her, so she shot him. She could be heard on the call trying to revive him.
A hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Dec. 16 and a final hearing has been scheduled for 1 p.m. Jan. 6, according to Jeff Foltz, bailiff for Stark County Common Pleas Judge Chryssa Hartnett. The trial is slated to begin Jan. 11.

On the third day of testimony in a standing-room-only courtroom, jurors heard from Massillon police Det. Jason Gohlike, the lead investigator in the case... They also viewed autopsy photos and X-rays of Rob McKernan showing where 10 bullets entered his body in his head and torso...

Gohlike said he was looking for any indication of a struggle when he was called to the scene... and he didn't see any signs in the hallway or the bedroom. He was told when he arrived that Colleen McKernan had called 911 and told a dispatcher that Rob McKernan hit her and was coming at her...

Neighbor Michael Sakotas... said he recalled the McKernans coming home because he was familiar with the sound of the exhaust pipe of the Chevy Trailblazer. After hearing the McKernans returning home, he remembered hearing an odd sound which he described as "a rapid knock like someone trying to get into a house." He heard several of the knocking sounds within a few seconds without a pause.

A sobbing Colleen McKernan told jurors Tuesday about what led her to grab her gun from her bedroom windowsill and shoot her husband to death after a night of drinking...

It was her second day on the stand and the sixth day of testimony in her trial in Stark County Common Pleas Court...

She bowed her head when jurors listened to the 911 recording. "Listen to me, I'm really drunk and my husband put his hands on me again," she is heard telling a dispatcher. She gets louder and frantic as she counts chest compressions. She can be heard breathing into him and continuing CPR until the police arrive.

Judge Chryssa Hartnett addressed the courtroom after the jury was seated. A unanimous verdict could not be reached, she announced, declaring a mistrial...

The 10-man and two-woman jury deadlocked on the fate of the 28-year-old woman, and Hartnett said a second trial is likely.

Attorneys will meet Tuesday morning to discuss the next phase in the case, as well as whether McKernan will remain on house arrest, or be jailed at the request of the prosecution.

Hung jury was split 7-5 for guilty verdict, juror says.

"CANTON No new trial date has been set for Colleen McKernan, whose murder trial in Stark County Common Pleas Court ended with a hung jury last week.

McKernan is accused of fatally shooting her husband, Rob, New Year's Eve 2014. She shot him 10 times in their Massillon home, according to evidence presented in the trial.

Prosecutors intend to continue pursuing a murder charge, said assistant Stark County Prosecutor Jennifer Dave, and are in the process of scheduling a new date. McKernan was indicted by a grand jury in March 2015 on a murder charge with a firearm specification. She faces 18 years to life in prison, if convicted.

The 28-year-old has denied the murder charge and is claiming she acted in self-defense..."
