Do we know what happened to the girlfriend at Indiana University? Why is it that she is never named? Was she questioned about any troubles they might have had? Did she help search for him? Did they even try to locate her?
Is this right, he had a girlfriend at Indiana University? Because to me, he looks like this Doe, found late Oct 1966 near Geneseo IL in Henry County which is about five hours from Bloomington IN:

Compared to Ron Tammen...
Doe had a bullet hole in the base of his skull, his age est 16-30yo, they found partial skeletal parts only, 5'5" to 5'10" it sounds like those remains could have been there for a very long time, I'm seeing up to five years in the Doe's thread (and that jmo might be on the conservative side).
Cleveland mob very strong in the 50s. Organized crime had a history in Rock Island, IL, which is about a half hour from Geneseo. There was a standing alliance between Cleveland mob & the Chicago Outfit at this time, with a lot of shared interests. And just noting, I read Ronald was playing with his band that night. The mob exerted a lot of control in the music industry in this period, including jukeboxes, and they seemed enamored with musicians generally. And of course-- gambling, which was noted by a lot of posters on here already. And the dead fish.
What I find a little odd is there was a prominent mobster, Jimmy Fratianno, who came up through the Cleveland mob, he moved to California after he was paroled in 1945. In 1953, he murdered"Russian Louie" Strauss, and that would have happened sometime that evening after they picked up Strauss on April 16. It's just a couple of days later that Ronald Tammen disappears. Couldn't help noticing it. This Doe sounds like a potential mob hit, whether it's Ronald Tammen, though...? Again jmo, but he does look like him.
