The victim was identified as 60-year-old Marchelle Freeman, who died at the scene.

Butler initially told authorities at the scene that he was defending himself from Freeman when he shot her. He was later interviewed at the station and revealed that she made him angry after Freeman allegedly kicked and poked him. Butler told police that he grabbed his gun and fired in her direction but didn't realize she was struck until she dropped to the floor, according to court records, which also indicated that Butler asked a neighbor to call 911.
