Three killed in small plane crash departing from Plattsburgh; victims were from Quebec

A plane tried to make an emergency landing in Ohio after leaving Plattsburgh, according to the Western Reserve Port Authority.

The pilot was identified as 54-year-old Jawdat Khawama. The two passengers were identified as 45-year-old Martine Arseneault and 8-year-old Daphne Khawam, according to NBC affiliate WFMJ in Ohio. All three people were from Laval, Quebec.

WFMJ reported that Khawam was the President and CEO of Uandmycar.com, the owner of the Beechcraft BE-60.

The NTSB told First News the plane was a Beechcraft BE-60 airplane and that the pilot reported a loss of engine power. The FAA also stated that the plane took off from Plattsburgh International Airport in Plattsburgh, New York. The final destination of the aircraft is currently unknown.

The Beech Duke is an absolute handful on one engine. With one engine inop it's got the highest rudder-force of any piston twin – 150 pounds-force [670 newtons] at Vmc (minimum control airspeed) – which happens to be the maximum the FAA allows It's not an airplane for a novice pilot. When I flew charter for a Beechcraft dealership back in the early 80's they wouldn't let pilots fly it that didn't have at least a couple of thousand of hours of flight time. It will be telling to see how much experience he had. A tragedy all the way around.
