We both came back here to the house, to the barn,” Grady Benson said. “He shined his lights up there so I could get the door open, aired up a couple of tires .
Grady said he exchanged just a few words with his father before he departed to get back to work.
“I circled around, he was standing by his pickup, and the garage was open,” Grady said. “He said, ‘I might not stick my head out tomorrow, I’ve got a little bit of a cough, but don’t think anything of it.’ I said, ‘Okay, but still, I’ll see you tomorrow.’ And whenever I drove out, that was the last time I seen him.”

From there, Grady says, his father headed back home, after telling him that he wasn’t feeling his best and might not be out to work in the fields the next day. Grady said his father, in fact, did not come to the fields the next day, but he didn’t think anything of it since he’d said he might not.

That night, Grady got a flat tire on the plow and Bruce drove his pickup truck out to help.”I was getting a tire out of the barn, and he pulled up there and shined his lights, so I could turn the lights on in the barn,” Grady said.
Bruce said goodbye from inside his truck.
”I told him I’d see him tomorrow,” Grady said. “Nothing out of the ordinary.”

He had come back by the field and brought me supper that night from the fish house, gave me a ride back to my pickup,” Grady Junior stated. “Whenever I was leaving out, I stopped and talked to him again, thanked him for the fish and told him I’d see him the next day and all that.
