GRIGGS Leroy "Bud" Kincannon went for a walk 10 days ago near his rural Panhandle home. The 75-year-old Alzheimer's disease victim hasn't been seen since.

Authorities and friends are puzzled by the disappearance of Kincannon, who lives near no major highway and is known by almost everyone in the area.

Family members fear he might have been picked up by a motorist, and the elderly man could be in a mission or shelter hundreds of miles from home.

"What you've got is a 75-year-old kid out here on the road," said Ron Kincannon, the missing man's son. "He's as helpless as a 6-year-old and having to fend for himself. He no longer has the capacity to do so."

Searchers from five states have scoured the rolling plains of Cimarron County for a week with little to show for their efforts, Kincannon said. Volunteers have covered the area on foot, horseback, and from the air.

An estimated 300 people have joined the search since family members began looking for the elderly man the night of July 24, and have covered a 400-square mile area, Kincannon said.

Civil Air Patrol groups from Oklahoma City and Dalhart, Texas, flew over the Panhandle area last weekend, and a Dalhart, Texas, horse-riding club searched the Texas area south of the Panhandle.

Flyers with Bud Kincannon's picture on them have been circulated to authorities in Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico, Colorado and Texas, Ron Kincannon said. He said neighbors have taken the flyers with them on business trips.

"We have distributed flyers from south Texas up into Canada," Kincannon said. "They're in truck stops west and east and south.

The elder Kincannon was last seen about 5 p.m. on July 24 when he told his wife he was going on a walk outside his house near this small community about 20 miles southeast of Boise City.

He is described as 6-foot-1, about 160 pounds, and was last known to be wearing an orange cap, khaki pants and light blue shirt. He had no money or identification with him.

He probably now has a beard and "looks pretty scruffy by now," Kincannon said. He said his father also may be confused and quiet.
